Continuing on Five tonight is the second series of the US spin-off sitcom starring everybody’s favourite ‘Friend’, Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc). With double helpings on Sunday evenings, the series charts Joey’s new life in LA, where he lives with his feisty sister, Gina (Drea de Matteo, ‘The Sopranos’), and her intelligent but shy son Michael (Paulo Constanzo, ‘Road Trip’).

In tonight’s first episode, Joey is unimpressed when an estranged school-friend resurfaces after 20 years, bringing with him a surprise for Michael; and Joey’s attempts to bond with crew members on set cause a few crossed wires.

When Joey arrives home to the news that an old school friend has called, he is not happy. “That guy is dead to me!” he tells Gina and Michael, explaining that Jimmy Costa had severed all ties with him after years of friendship. He adds that he never knew why his former best friend had dropped out of his life, but Gina thinks she knows. When Joey leaves the room, she confesses to Alex that she is the real reason behind the estrangement – Gina and Jimmy once slept together, violating the ‘code’ between the friends that stipulated no dating each others’ sisters.

Much to Joey’s displeasure, Jimmy pays him a visit and tells him that he has been through a rough patch and now wants to make amends for his past. Gina grabs him to stop him telling Joey about their affair, but when their arguing turns into a passionate embrace, Joey finds out for himself! Joey eventually decides to let bygones be bygones, but is soon confronted with a new dilemma when he correctly deduces that Jimmy is Michael’s father. Gina does not want to tell either of them, but Joey is not convinced that the secret will remain hidden for long. “They’ll figure it out eventually,” he tells her. “You think so?” asks Gina, but she realises her brother is right when he points out: “I figured it out!” What will Michael think when he finds out who his dad is?

In tonight’s second episode, Joey instigates a bachelors’ road trip to Tijuana, and Alex decides that she needs to have more fun. When Michael complains that he has broken up with his girlfriend, Joey and his bachelor neighbour, Dean, offer their unique brand of advice. “Being single is great,” explains Joey. “You can say ‘tonight, I’m going to pick up and go to Tijuana!’” To prove his point, Joey decides to do just that, and a road trip to Mexico is planned.

Upon arrival, it is not long before the boys are making the most of their freedom, downing shots of unidentified spirit in a wild bar. In an effort to get over his ex-girlfriend, Michael chats up a young woman, but things start badly: “My mum has an amazing body,” he opens. Luckily for Michael, however, the girl cannot speak a word of English and is not put off by his bizarre lines.

The next morning, Joey is a little worse for wear, but Zach feels great and leaps to his feet, asking “Who’s in the mood for scrambled egg and fish?” Michael is also happy, since he seems to have convinced the Mexican girl to stay, but his mood quickly changes when he finds a video recorded on the previous night showing the revellers at a shotgun wedding. However, it is not Michael and the anonymous girl who got married, but Joey and Zach!

Back at home, the newlyweds explain their predicament to Alex and ask for her professional help. Unfortunately for them, Alex has decided that she does not have enough fun in her life, and elects to play a trick on the boys. Despite finding the marriage certificate to be worthless, not least because Joey signed his name “Sombrero Pete, Lord of the Bullwhips”, she tells them that they must appeal directly to the Mexican president to have their partnership dissolved…
