Joey - Sunday September 9

Concluding on Five tonight is the second series of the US spin-off sitcom starring everybody’s favourite ‘Friend’, Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc). With double helpings on Sunday evenings, the series charts Joey’s new life in LA, where he lives with his feisty sister, Gina (Drea de Matteo, ‘The Sopranos’), and her intelligent but shy son, Michael (Paulo Constanzo, ‘Road Trip’).

In tonight’s first episode, Joey wants something more from his relationship with Alex – but she is only interested in the physical side. And Jimmy proposes to Gina, but has a small problem to deal with first…

Having finally persuaded Alex that they would make a good couple, Joey is now facing an unprecedented conundrum: he has discovered that he wants more from the relationship than just sex. After a chat with Gina about her relationship with Jimmy, Joey realises that he and Alex do not connect on a deeper level and resolves to rectify the situation.

Meanwhile, Jimmy has decided that he wants to marry Gina – and she says yes to his proposal, much to everyone’s delight. However, when she sells the engagement ring he gives her and buys a car, the volatile pair erupt into yet another argument and start to wonder if they are doing the right thing. “You guys are getting married,” says Joey soothingly. “You’re gonna have angry kids with beards and fake boobs.”

Suggesting that a spot of relationship counselling might be in order, Joey invites a priest (Neil Flynn, ‘Scrubs’, ‘Mean Girls’) round to talk to the warring couple… but the session reveals an unexpected secret: Jimmy is already married to a rich woman named Tracy (Julia Sweeney, ‘Saturday Night Live’)! When Jimmy and Joey visit Tracy at her current residence –prison –she reluctantly agrees to sign the divorce papers… and also has some advice for Joey’s love life. Can he straighten things out with Alex?

Also in this episode, Michael meets a beautiful woman on the internet, but Joey is convinced that his new friend is a man. Could the name ‘Sexy Steve’ be an indication that he is right?

In tonight’s second episode – the last ever Joey – the day of Jimmy and Gina’s wedding arrives, but not everything goes according to plan. And Joey is invited to throw the first pitch at a Dodgers game… but his skills may not be up to scratch.

Preparations are underway for the Jimmy and Gina nuptials, and Alex is getting extremely excited as she helps out. “Uh-oh Joe, you’re in trouble,” observes Jimmy, who thinks that Alex is performing a practice run for her own wedding. When Joey confronts Alex, she is affronted and asks: “You think I’m trying to trap you?” “Not trap me,” corrects Joey, “lure me into like, a cage or a pit or something.” Alex tells Joey to relax: after her last marriage went south, she never wants to get hitched again.

Joey is upset –what if he wanted to marry Alex some day? But there are more pressing concerns to deal with when both Jimmy and Gina get cold feet and run out on the wedding. With time running out before Joey is supposed to be at the Dodgers game, and before the priest is due elsewhere, Michael and Joey manage to track the runaways down at the bus station. Can they convince them to come back and get married?
