My Body Hell - Wednesday September 26

my body hell (2/5)
20.00–21.00

This groundbreaking new documentary series provides a revealing insight into the complex world of women’s beauty, using candid testimony from real women across the country.

In a British television first, My Body Hell takes viewers inside the bathrooms of female celebrities and everyday women as they pluck, squeeze and shave their bodies to within an inch of their lives. The series also asks why 98 per cent of women hate their bodies when they are perfectly normal and attractive. Unique in its genre, My Body Hell does not attempt to make women over, but rather encourages them to love and accept their bodies –freckles, stretch marks, wrinkles and all!

The focus of today’s edition is the face, which is one area upon which women seem more than happy to lavish cash in pursuit of perfection –from blemish-free skin to perfect peepers, bee-stung pouts and salon-perfect hair. Last year, British women spent a massive £1 billion on cosmetics – more per head than any of our continental cousins.

In this investigation into beauty obsessions north of the neckline, Liberty X chanteuse and make-up addict Michelle Heaton bravely goes slap-free to a movie premiere –but can she cope so far out of her cosmetic comfort zone?

Elsewhere, a woman explains how her hatred of her lips has had the dramatic effect of stopping her snogging; while another contributor tells how her extremely flaky scalp turns a little black dress into a snow storm. Plus, ‘Big Brother’ contestant Charley does battle with her extensions on the ultimate bad hair day.

Hi, Can someone let me know where the hair studio is which did the mesh type thing on the beautican ladies hair, as I have very fine hair, and would love to try what the lady in the programme had done, it looked great and very natural!

  • Anonymous

The lady who helped the interviewee with thinning hair is called Dolores Mackenzie – a google search fo her name will bring up results with info on her salons.

Dr Rita Rakus was the specialist who plumped up the other lady’s lips. Again, goggle search her name for more info…

Hi, can you let me know where the lady with the thinning hair went. She had the mesh treatment. I know there are other companies who do this treatment but I want to check them all out as it is very expensive, but I also want to ensure I go to a place I feel comfortable. I am surprised at how many women have written in here requesting the same information…..it shows just how bad female hair loss is getting and that I am not alone. I went to the hospital the other day for blood tests for my hair loss. The receptionist had thinning hair, the nurse who took the blood test had thinning hair….women everywhere are losing their hair….what is happening? I think it has something to do with the environment and possibly the chemicals pumped into food these days….but nobody is going to admit it. My life is dominated by my lack of hair and feeling inadequate…constantly trying to hide the baldness, spraying my scalp with a specially formulated scalp spray to colour in the bald areas. They tell me it is female pattern baldness…..is that supposed to make me feel better?! I look forward to receiving details of the hair salon. Thank you.

I think this show is good because it brings to light what women go through to make them feel more confident in themselves. But watching last nights show was very distressing, and I actually became quite tearful. How could you do a whole piece on hair loss and NOT ONCE mention alopecia? I have suffered from aa and I have a lot of friends who have and still do on AUK.uk, no one on the show spoke of it last night – and one of the women on there even said that if she lost her hair then she wouldnt be able to leave the house! Well of course everyone who knows what its like will know that there are days when you dont want to face the world, but we all have bills to pay and people to see etc so we dont get the choice to stay indoors and hide away.
I personally feel very let down by My Body Hell for not mentioning any kind of Alopecia – and I’m not the only one.

    Hi
Very good prog……No chance that Im no different to other women’s insecurities. I suffer from eczma from childhood which left me with scars particularly on my legs, hands and neck. Really want to show off my legs but just cant coz of the scars. Naomi Campbell look alike uses or used to use some cream (the one with no after effects) that Im sure could help me clear my scars. Does anyone know? Cheers x

I am somewhat concerned about the message that was conveyed by this programme. I have lost all of my hair (alopecia universalis) and it is very unlikely to grow back. However I am still very much a ‘feminine’ woman, with a successful career, a wonderful partner and lovely children. These women were portrayed as self obssessed and vain to the extreme, now this may or may not be the case but I am concerned that this was also projected as being acceptable.

In response to Suzanne Parker and Anonymous:

I am a woman in my early 20’s with androgenetic alopecia, from which over the last three years have lost 80% of my hair. The doctors say there is no remedy, and I cannot afford a hair transplant or a volumiser (I wear wigs, even though I’m far from happy with them). First of all, my purpose for posting here is not to beg for pity or lament how dire my life is, but rather to let you know that you’re not alone and that it’s natural to feel depressed.

My life too is dominated by my lack of hair; I used to have an active social life but since alopecia I’ve become very withdrawn, and have very few friends left. I’ve managed to hold onto my job, but only by a whisker. Everyday tasks like shopping are still painful because I’m hyper aware of how much hair most other women have and how little I have. I know that I am not in any way inferior to everyone else simply because they have hair and I don’t, and I still try to act confident and smile, but inside I still feel awful. I don’t know how many times I’ve said to myself “just pull yourself together/things could be worse”, but it’s never worked.

I should try to pep you up, encourage you to be positive bla bla bla, but it’s a mission. I’m very pleased for the woman who has alopecia universalis and has a successful career and marriage, and I wish I could try to be as upbeat as she about my condition. BUT IT’S GODDAMN TOUGH. What upsets me is that I don’t know anyone, least of all anyone my own age, who is affected by the same condition. I feel completely alone.

I feel generally that there is not enough televised awareness of all forms of female hair loss, and the 2 minute segment on MBH was no exception. Perhaps MBH, or some other program, will take note and dedicate an entire programme to this very subject? I’d be happy to be participate!

    Hi,
I watched this show apathetically until the hair loss item came up and then it grabbed my attention. “Finally” I thought – a programme highlighting the agony we go through when women (like myself) lose their hair and haven’t a clue what to do about it. But, unfortunately, like every other programme I have seen that has touched on this condition it left me wanting more information.

My hair was my best feature, long, straight and blonde and I was devastated when it started to fall out.

I started to see hair loss about 6 years ago at the age of 43 and expressed my concern to the doctor who sent me for blood tests for thyroid and iron which came back normal for thyroid but slighly low for iron. Then zinc was tested – again low. So I went on a course of Iron and Zinc. I was also sent to the Menopause Clinic because of my extremely heavy periods – another reason why my Iron level might be low – I was told this could be a symptom of the menopause. What followed was blood test after blood test every 6 months or so checking my thyrdoid and iron, until finally, after losing two thirds of my thick, long, blonde and beautiful hair, and a great deal of my self-confidence, the doctor finally told me that my blood test for thyroid had gone from around 3 to 9 and I was prescribed Levothyroxine for an Under-active Thyroid – one of the main causes of Hair Loss.(They are supposed to treat you for under-active thyroid when it hits 10 but because I had presented with other symptoms they treated me). Also, once you are diagnosed with an under/over active thyroid you get your prescriptions for free – maybe another reason why the doctors are so reluctant to follow up this condition. It took around 3 months for me to notice a difference – the amount of hairs that fell into the sink was reducing…. but actually, the main difference for me was KNOWING WHAT THE CAUSE OF MY HAIR LOSS WAS! Before I knew I had an under-active thyroid I thought it was androgenic (male pattern baldness caused by the menopause) – having been sent to the Menopause Clinic at St James Hospital in Leeds. Instead of wondering if anything I was doing to my hair, or my diet was causing my hair loss I now had an answer. So…. my main reason for venting my spleen here is to ask every woman out there who is despairing at the sight of her locks flowing down the drain to go to the Doctor and INSIST on a blood test for Thyroid and if it comes back negative, re-book a test for the next 3/6 months and so on – this is more common than people realise and is much more treatable than genetic hair loss. There! I’ve finished – just got time to do a quick comb-over!

  • Anastasia

    Hi, again,
Sorry – forgot to mention – after I was diagnosed as having an Under-active thyroid I bumped into a Nurse at the surgery and got chatting. I mentioned the problem I was having with periods that prevented me from going out for a couple of days as I was going through half a box of Superplus tampax a day and getting pretty depressed about it all. She said that an under-active thyroid can wreak havoc with menstruation and causes extremely heavy periods … maybe too much information for some of you out there! but informative for others! Anyway, since taking the thyroxine medication everything is MUCH better. (Merry Christmas for 3 months time!)

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately I didnt catch the show, but my Mum told me about it. I too have been suffering from hair loss for many years and was ecstatic when I was told I had an under active thyroid – because I could put it down to something. But, the Docs and I soon realised that my hair loss wasnt a symptom of my thyroid problems, now the Doctors have told me that I have androgenetic alopecia. I was gutted as I am sure you know how I feel. The Doctors I saw were extremely unsympathetic and I was told basically “there is nothing we can do” and dont you think I would have done something about my baldness if there were a cure” – the response from a male doctor. I am still numb….. and am sorry that I am not strong enough to bear the second glances or pitiful looks – I hate it. My biggest wish would be to walk in the wind and the rain without the fear of my hair looking worse – just to feel free against the elements, without hiding what little hair I have under a hood or hat. I am just too weak to deal with the way people would respond to it. This is my issue not anyone elses and I do not expect sympathy. I wish I were stronger……

If you feel alone, then I suggest you look up on http://www.alopeciaonline.org.uk/
    – This is a charity based site for sufferers of alopecia, and you will not feel so alone anymore…..please at least have a look, you might feel better for it

if you are bald you should kill your hairiest pet and strip them of their coat of fur. dry it out then stik it to your bald patch using an industrial strength glue. This works perfectly and has given me a thik head of fur for many years now.
    hope you find this useful

    Hi Everyone,

I have slightly thinning hair but suffer horrendously with excessive hair on the front of my neck. I have had this in varying degrees for a very long time and it has caused my marriage nearly to break up (I can’t let my husband near me unless I have just had my daily “shave”. Is there anyone out there who can offer some friendly advice as to how to deal with my problem. The hair covers virtually the whole of my neck and my doctor has told me – after a blood test – that it is nothing hormonal. He said he cannot/will not help me any further.

Is there anyone out there that has the same problem and something has worked for them?

PLEASE don’t put any funny comments as this upsets me terribly.

    Hi There,

Have you thought about/tried laser hair removal? What would happen is that you can get your hair bleached (skin colour- not obvious at all) with a laser and after a few days the hair just comes off. I have ‘normal’ hair growth on my face (upper lip, chin) and get lasering done once every few months. The results are instant and it is not too painful or costly. Also there are various types of lasers out there, I use the ‘soft-light’ machine but there are other types available which may suit you better. They should invite you in for a free patch test to make sure your skin won’t adversly react in any way.

Good Luck and I hope it works out for you! 🙂
