New Episode

Continuing this week on Five is the wildlife series
anchored by animal expert Michaela Strachan
and ex-‘Blue Peter’ presenter Matt Baker. The
series looks at the urgent work going on to save
and protect animals in the UK and abroad – from
large-scale conservation projects to tiny wildlife
sanctuaries. In this week’s instalment, abandoned
Rottweiler Nero desperately needs a new home;
three brown pelicans in California must pass a
health check before they can be released into the
wild; and Merlin the cat needs treatment for a
serious infection.
Animal Rescue Squad follows the efforts of zoologists, vets and volunteers to help animals around the world. The series focuses on the unsung heroes of animal conservation, who work tirelessly to improve the lives of creatures in zoos, safari parks, wildlife reserves and public areas.
This week, abandoned Rottweiler Nero is on ‘dog death row’ in Newport. Nero was caught by dog wardens a week ago but, as the pound is completely full, Vanessa Waddon must find him a home or he could face being put to sleep. With recent bad publicity about Rottweilers not helping his cause, Nero will have to prove that he has the potential be a perfect pet if he is to be taken in.
In California, Michaela arrives at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Centre where rehabilitated brown pelicans Marilyn, Audrey and Grace are nearing a return to the wild. Before the birds can enjoy the open ocean, however, they must gain a clean bill of health from vet David Chapman. With Grace suffering an injury to her pouch, will she be left behind?
Finally, at Eden Hill surgery in Newcastle, Merlin the cat is fighting a long-standing infection and is brought to vet Jason Atherton by his concerned owners. When it transpires that Merlin’s infection cannot be treated by antibiotics, Jason must decide on a radical but life-saving solution.
