Last In Series

Concluding this week on Five is the wildlife series anchored by animal expert Michaela Strachan and ex-‘Blue Peter’ presenter Matt Baker. The series looks at the urgent work going on to save and protect animals in the UK and abroad – from large-scale conservation projects to tiny wildlife sanctuaries. In this week’s instalment, a black leopard goes on a road trip; a seal is released back into the wild; and a rescued dog undergoes an operation.

Animal Rescue Squad follows the efforts of zoologists, vets and volunteers to help animals around the world. The series focuses on the unsung heroes of animal conservation, who work tirelessly to improve the lives of creatures in zoos, safari parks, wildlife reserves and public areas.

In this week’s series finale, vet Sue Thornton organises the two hundred-mile relocation of Ebony the black leopard to her new home at Exmoor Zoo in Devon. Can the team at Santago Rare Leopard Sanctuary safely sedate her, enter her pen and then move her to the travel crate whilst keeping her asleep for the delicate and dangerous move?

Elsewhere, Michaela is at Sea World in San Diego where Hazel the seal is being examined by vet Todd Schmitt ahead of a possible return to the wild. Hazel and three accompanying sea lions seem to have fully recovered from their respective injuries and are eager to taste freedom. But Michaela and the team are not prepared for a last-minute hitch that looks like it might scupper the ocean release.

Also this week, Nelly the Staffordshire bull terrier cross faces surgery. Nelly has already been saved from terrible cruelty after being found close to death on a main road. Now, she is brought into Eden Hill surgery in Newcastle with a suspicious lump. Vet Jason decides he must operate, but will the growth be benign or something more sinister?
