Perfect Villages (2/6)

Continuing on Five this week is the informative and entertaining six-part series that explores how to find the perfect place to live in Britain. Each week, the show pinpoints the best locales to start a property hunt using up-to-the-minute industry knowledge. The series is co-presented by lifestyle and property expert Melissa Porter (‘I Own Britain’s Best Home’) and home-renovation specialist Ian Blandford. This week’s programme provides a rundown of the ten most idyllic villages in the UK.

Each instalment of the Property List presents a countdown of the best places to either buy or build a home. A different theme is covered in each programme, from Britain’s sunniest coastal idylls and cosiest village communities to the next big boom towns and cities.

Every location featured in the countdown has been thoroughly researched against certain criteria, including property prices and employment rates, as well as the state of the local economy and the quality of life in the area. Properties in all price brackets and regions will be highlighted in the top ten – so there is something for every budget.

As well as presenting all the facts up front, the series attempts to show the human side of these winning neighbourhoods through interviews with estate agents and the people who live there.

While property on the continent is perceived to be better value for money, this series encourages buyers to look closer to home, and demonstrates that the dream may well be within arm’s reach.

Many people dream of a way of life that is becoming ever more elusive in the modern world: a life in a chocolate-box village with a cordial publican who knows every local’s tipple; a wide village green where kids can play; little traffic except for the odd tractor; clean, fresh air; good schools; and a close-knit community. While villages like this are hard to find in Britain, they do still exist.

This week’s Property List sees Melissa and Ian travel the length and breadth of the country in search of the most idyllic spots. After extensive research, the experts reveal Britain’s ten most desirable villages, including the likes of Cotherstone in County Durham, Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire, Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds and Llyswen in Wales. In selecting the finalists, criteria such as crime rates, schools, climate and transport links have all been taken into consideration. And it is not only those with a spare million or two in their back pockets who can hope to secure this lifestyle – Melissa and Ian hunt down a countryside cottage for every budget.
