After the Second World War, Britain was desperate to remain a great power alongside the new superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. Successive governments invested millions in an incredible array of weapons, in the hope that they would maintain the nation’s place at the top table. In 1957 the newsreels announced with patriotic fanfare that Britain had entered the thermonuclear era of the H-bomb.
