Brighton Beach Patrol Premiere

This brand new series follows the work of the police, lifeguards and coastguard who patrol Brighton’s world-famous beach. In the first episode, the summer season kicks off with a festival opened by Fat Boy Slim. A paddleboarder goes missing while competing in a race along the shore. And police try to keep unruly behaviour to a minimum on the city’s night-time streets.

Every summer, eight million people descend on Brighton as the city’s population doubles in size during the holiday season. The big draw is the world-famous beach, one of Britain’s most iconic seaside destinations. Filmed throughout the summer of 2009, this new series follows the emergency services on land and sea, day and night, as they work to ensure that holidaymakers’ good times do not end in disaster.

The cameras follow the work of Brighton’s lifeguards, who last year saved six lives and carried out 41 rescues, and the Police Community Support Officers, who patrol the beach and enforce the city’s bylaws and regulations. They are supported by coastguards who co-ordinate sea rescues in RNLI lifeboats. These vessels can be called out at a moment’s notice to save boats and swimmers in distress. The programme also catches up with the officers behind Sussex Police’s Operation Marble, which aims to stop drunk revellers running wild through the city’s streets every weekend.

Through the work of the emergency services, ‘Brighton Beach Patrol’ meets people from all walks of life, from drag queens and beach cleaners to teashop owners, nightclub bosses, hotel managers and fishermen. The series is set against the backdrop of Brighton’s year-round programme of festivals and events, ranging from Gay Pride to the Brighton Carnival and the season-ending White Air Festival.

Together, the cops, characters and partygoers form a rich and diverse assortment of human life – a testament to why Brighton remains one of the country’s top tourist destinations, with record numbers of visitors for the current summer season.

In the first episode of the series, Brighton’s summer season kicks off with its annual ‘Paddle round the Pier’ festival – opened by local superstar Fat Boy Slim. Whilst the partygoers compete to float the craziest rafts around Brighton pier, lifeguard Joe watches over proceedings to make sure no one ends up in danger.

Meanwhile, coastguards Des and Ray have another headache on their hands. A rookie paddleboarder taking part in a 20-mile race is hours behind the rest of the field and the weather is about to turn. Can they locate the missing man before things get nasty?

Elsewhere, as day becomes night, police officers Lou and Rick have their work cut out making sure the city’s drunken visitors behave. The morning after, their colleagues Gill and Dave face their own dramas when they go hunting for a missing person known to be sleeping rough on the streets.
