Emmerdale News

The set of Emmerdale is to be moved back the buildings in which it used to be filmed, but only after a radical ‘makeover’ that’s to cost in the region of £5 million.

According to a representative of ITV Studios, the move is to “safeguard the future” of the show. The Emmerdale production centre will, the source added, “be housed with first class high definition facilities” at the Kirkstall Road studios in Leeds.

The show’s current studios are at the back of the Kirkstall Road centre. It seems that the primary reason for the move is that the lighting and editing suites require “considerable updating.”

The managing director of ITV Studios, Lee Bartlett, said, “This investment is about safeguarding the future of Emmerdale.

“Giving this highly-respected production team and cast an up-to-date modern purpose-built facility is key to enhancing the quality of our production many years into the future.

“Few cities outside London can boast production of three hours of prime time top-rated drama every week, and this team deserves the best possible environment in which to work and operate.”

It’s expected that work on the new complex will start in the New Year, and it’s expected to take around 12 months until the centre’s ready for use. Perhaps the reason the show’s bosses have decided to invest so much in the show is because since the show acquired a new producer, Gavin Blyth, the show’s viewing figures have gone up.

In an interview with DS, Blyth said, “The ratings are in great shape and autumn has seen us more than 1% up on the same time last year, so that’s no mean achievement.

“I’m thrilled that we’re topping 7m on a regular basis now. I don’t know what more I could have expected within the year as when I came on board, that’s what I wanted to do.

“Collectively, to have achieved that turnaround – in a relatively short space of time – it’s fantastic.

“It would be great to maintain that and continue to build on the level we’re currently at.”

Indeed it would – less ‘comedy Viv’ would suit me fine too! More news from the Dales soon.
