Gavin Hood’s thriller stars Reese Witherspoon as Isabella Fields El-Ibrahimi, the wife of American-Egyptian chemical engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi. When Anwar disappears on his way home from a conference in South Africa, she is driven frantic trying to find proof of his whereabouts in the face of official denial. Anwar is being held as a suspected terrorist in secrecy in Marrakech, where CIA operative Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) is reluctantly involved in his torture. Meanwhile, one of the torturer’s daughters, Fatima (Zineb Oukach), is secretly in love with a fellow student who may be following extreme paths. As Hood brings the strands together, the various characters’ actions intertwine, moving towards a dramatic conclusion.
