New York-based spin-off of the crime drama series. After armed robbers steal $5million worth of jewellery from a hotshot lawyer, the bodies of everyone who comes into contact with the gems begin turning up left, right and centre. As lawyer Roland Carson argues with a client, several armed men burst into his apartment. Carson’s bodyguard, James Belson, rushes the gunmen, but they open fire, injuring him and fatally wounding Carson’s client. The robbers make off in a helicopter with over $5million worth of jewels. Flack and Danny locate the helicopter that the men used to make their escape, and inside they discover the dead body of one of the criminals. Later, at the lab, Hawkes recovers a microchip from one of the empty jewel bags found in the helicopter. Adam uses the signal to trace the other chips, and is surprised when he is led to Sid’s morgue. He finds the microchip embedded in a shoe belonging to a John Doe, who died recently from a gunshot wound to the head. As the investigation proceeds, the CSIs hypothesise that their victim was out walking when the bag of jewels fell from the helicopter and landed at his feet. The thieves used the tracking chip, which somehow made its way from the bag to his shoe, to hunt him down and kill him. The mystery man is finally identified when his tearful girlfriend appears at the precinct to inform the CSIs that her boyfriend, Heath Kirkfield, went missing that morning as he went to hand the bag of jewels in to the police.
