The Mentalist: Red Hot

Thursday 17 February, 9:00pm on Fiver

The hit US drama series following the work of independent CBI consultant Patrick Jane continues. In this week’s show, Jane and the team narrowly escape a fiery end when a building explodes while they are investigating a death threat. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Lisbon and billionaire Walter Mashburn when they meet again during a case. Now in its third season, ‘The Mentalist’ centres around Patrick Jane (Simon Baker, ‘The Guardian’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’), an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation. Jane made his name as a TV psychic, but quit that job amidst tragic circumstances. As a publicity stunt to raise his own profile, Jane made an on-screen appeal to a serial killer known as Red John – only for the killer to murder Jane’s wife and daughter. Jane now readily admits that he was a fraud, but has found that his remarkable powers of observation and psychological manipulation are an asset to the police. As an independent consultant with the CBI, he has a proven track record for solving serious crimes – but he has also gained notoriety for his blatant lack of protocol and his celebrity past. However, Jane’s sole motivation in remaining with the bureau is to track down the man responsible for killing his family. No-nonsense CBI senior agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, ‘The Craft’, ‘Prison Break’) takes the heat from her boss, Madeleine Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis), for Jane’s theatrics and lack of boundaries – but acknowledges his usefulness and counts him as a friend. Lisbon’s team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang), who serves as the lead interrogator with a desert-dry demeanour; Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), the team’s resident explosives expert; and relative newcomer Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), an optimist who is often at odds with Jane’s more jaded views. Although the CBI agents agree that Jane is a loose cannon, they cannot help but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases.
