HMS Ark Royal: The Final Journey

TUESDAY 19TH APRIL, 10.00pm

In August 2010, Hms Ark Royal returned to portsmouth to a tumultuous welcome after leading the largest peacetime deployment in a decade. But just two months later, with new Captain Jerry Kyd in place at her helm, there came the shock announcement that she faced immediate retirement. Hms Ark Royal was to be decommissioned along with the entire joint strike force of Harrier Jump Jets following the Government’s strategic defence review. In this special one-off, which concludes discovery Channel’s captivating brand new series, HMS Ark Royal, Captain Kyd leads Hms Ark Royal on her final voyage as the Flagship of the Royal Navy’s fleet. First she sails to

Glenmallen in scotland, a small and little-known port where the ship is stripped of her munitions. Her full complement of torpedoes, missiles and bombs are removed and loaded onto lorries to be driven to a secret military arsenal located deep inside a scottish hillside. Hms Ark Royal then embarks on the next leg of the poignant farewell voyage, docking in Newcastle – the city where she was built. Completing this significant journey, the Harriers fly once more off her ski slope, before Hms Ark Royal comes to the end of her Naval life, docking in portsmouth for the very last time.
