And Street exec defends criticism over Michelle Collins’ Manchunian accent

Coronation Street’s executive producer, Phil Collinson, has hinted that there’s a major storyline for Carla Connor (Alison King) in the coming months.
As has been previously rumoured, Carla is about to embark on a relationship with Frank Foster (Andrew Lancel), but it’s believed it’ll turn sour when he believes Carla’s having an affair with Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne).
Previously reported spoilers indicate that Frank will subject Carla to a brutal sexual and physical assault that could leave her fighting for her life.
It’s also been speculated that amid that storyline, Peter’s wife Leanne (Jane Danson) will also wonder if Peter and Carla have been having an affair, and that’s set to cause tensions between them.
And as Leanne is due to fall pregnant, rumour has it that a row with Peter over Carla will cause Leanne such stress that she’ll miscarry the baby.
But getting back to what Phil had to say, he told This Morning viewers, “We’ve got a big, big story for Carla across the autumn.
“I have to say, it’s one of the biggest stories that we’ve told on Corrie for many years. She’s going to have a pretty rough time across the autumn.
“It’s quite controversial, it’s all tied up with Peter Barlow and it’s all tied up with Frank who works with her at the factory.
“We’ll be revisiting the Carla and Peter romance, so Leanne’s going to have a tough time as well.”

In other news, Collinson has also defended Michelle Collins as Stella Price since viewers have mocked her Mancunian accent.
Viewers have labeled Michelle’s attempts at a Manchester accent as “cringe worthy” and “annoying.”
In response to the comments, and when asked why Michelle wasn’t cast as a Southerner, Collinson said, “I think the landlady of the Rovers Return would have to be a Northern character, really.
“I don’t think we could have had a Southerner running the pub. I think her accent’s great.
“I think the thing is people will just get used to it. Within a couple of weeks she’ll be Stella; she won’t be Cindy anymore.”
