TOWIE offered to Channel 4 first

It has been revealed that Channel 4 turned down The Only Way Is Essex before it was offered to ITV2.

Lime Pictures and All3Media, the show’s production companies, pitched the reality series to Channel 4 but the broadcaster decided to decline.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Tony Wood of Lime Pictures and Ruth Wrigley of All3Media said: “We went to Channel 4 first. We pitched it as Big Brother meets Hollyoaks.

“It’s a difficult thing to explain and they thought it would be like The Family.”

Wrigley also stated that the original concept of the series was for it to be based in Bournemouth and to be focussed on a group of surfers.
