Plus Marc Baylis reveals Rob Donovan’s back story

We’ll begin today’s round up of Coronation Street news with Alison King, who’s told Soaplife magazine that there’s a shocking climax in store for her character Carla Connor in the plot which has seen Carla’s boyfriend Peter Barlow giving custody of his son to estranged wife Leanne…

He did so when little Simon made it clear that it was Leanne he wanted to live with, and not his dad and Carla, but ever since Peter made the heartbreaking decision to abide by his son’s wishes, he’s been spiraling into a depression that will see him start drinking again.

And in anger, Peter will tell Carla that he wants to end their relationship because he says everything that’s gone wrong in his life is because of her…

But nonetheless, Carla will stand by Peter, and even support him when he attempts to take Simon out of the country.

Alison explained, “She loves Peter, but she feels a bit responsible for all the angst he’s going through over his son, and thinks maybe it would be easier if she’d have left him alone…

“They’re just in a really bad place and she’s losing patience because for once she’s been completely selfless and has pandered to his every need, walked around on eggshells and taken on his drinking and not judged him for it.

“[He’s] being really, really nasty to her. He starts saying she doesn’t fit in with his flat, there are things she’s bought that he doesn’t like the look of, and he tells her to pack her belongings and leave.

“She goes, but she doesn’t mean it; she thinks it will shock him into a reaction.”

However, when a drunk Peter goes missing, and a body is later found floating in the canal, police summon Carla and Ken to identify the corpse, but it turns out not to be Peter.

But Carla soon learns Peter’s whereabouts when he begs her to join him and Simon – who he’s lured away from Leanne – to start a new life abroad.

Of that, Alison said, “She would be stuck between trying to make Peter see sense and knowing that he’d go with Simon anyway so it would be better if she went with him.

“All I can say is it would be against the law for them to take Simon, but she’d still do that for Peter.”

We’ll see that dramatic storyline begin in upcoming episodes, but towards the end of the month, we’re set to see yet another high octane drama when Stella Price walks in on her boyfriend Karl snogging barmaid Sunita.

Karl and Sunita have of course only recently ended their affair, but it seems they “relapse” and share a kiss, only to have Stella walk in and catch them.

And of course, Stella will tell Dev – Sunita’s soon to be husband – and he will consider calling off their wedding. Eek!

Finally today, Corrie newbie Marc Baylis has revealed a little more about his character Rob Donovan via the show’s official website.

We’ll first see Rob on July 9th when he turns up out of the blue at his sister Carla’s factory, and instantly gets off on the wrong foot with Peter when Rob nearly punches him for rowing with Carla.

However, once Carla reveals to Peter who Rob is, things calm down somewhat and she then has a chance to find out what her brother’s doing there.

It will transpire that he’s just been released from prison, and of why he was in jail, Marc explained, “It was a one-off; Rob was the driver in a post-office robbery; he was trying to gather £5000 pounds to pay off his mother’s debts to a drug-dealer.”

He also revealed that Carla didn’t offer any help to the family at all, and it’s a sore point with him.

Marc said, “He felt Carla should have been there, because Rob thinks she would have had the money to help them out.

“He feels she disassociated herself from the rest of the family by abandoning them.”

Marc added, “The way I’m playing him is neither black nor white…

“He is a hard worker and family is very important to him, although he does have a very edgy side to him.

“When pushed or angered, I think he can be quite dangerous.”

Ooo I can’t wait to meet Rob! I love it when new characters turn up and cause mayhem!
