Plus Zak asks Cain for help with the loan sharks, and Steve Halliwell says Zak’s breakdown was “reflective of real life”
We’ll start today’s look at Emmerdale news with stars Mark Charnock and Charlotte Bellamy whose characters, Marlon Dingle and Laurel Thomas, are about to reignite their affair and become an official item in the village.
As fans will recall, Marlon and Laurel had a platonic affair last year which they ended so that Laurel could commit to making her marriage to Ashley work, but they have of course now split, so the way has been left open for Laurel and Marlon to be together properly this time.
And while speaking to TV Times magazine about their characters’ love affair, both Mark and Charlotte agreed that it’s a plotline they’re going to enjoy.
Of Marlon and Laurel getting together again, Mark said, “It feels really right. I love the fact that the writers didn’t allow them to consummate their relationship.
“They have had these amazing romantic feelings for each other for so long and now it is OK to reopen that door…
“It’s what viewers want too and now they can enjoy the romance without having to wag their moral finger at the characters.”
Charlotte added, “It is such a lovely climax to the whole Brief Encounter-style story. I think they are really great together.”
When asked what it was like filming “the moment when Marlon tells Laurel he loves her?” Mark replied, “I don’t think I have ever rehearsed anything as much since I have been at Emmerdale.
“There is so much subtext in the scenes that we really wanted to get it right. I liked the fact that it feels really different from the way soap couples usually get together.”
Charlotte added, “The scenes are funny, sweet and romantic. We need a bit of that in our village I think because everything is a bit heavy at the moment.”
And finally, when the pair were asked if they think things will work out for Marlon and Laurel, Mark said, “I hope they run with it. There is a really good chemistry between them on screen and we are really good mates off it.
“It feels like a new lease of life for Marlon. It has been a long time since he has been in an equal loving relationship and I think they are perfect together.
“They both have a lot of love to give, they are quirky and it is a meeting of minds. She is everything his heart desires.”
Charlotte concluded, “I don’t know what will happen. Laurel comes with a lot of baggage – Sandy and her two children. And Marlon has a child.
“It’s a big new family, so who knows what pressures and adventures that will bring.”
In other news, in tonight’s edition of Emmerdale, we’re going to see a desperate Zak asking his son Cain for help in getting the loan sharks off his back…
Because of course as we saw last night, despite striking up a deal with Charity and Lisa, the thugs are still pestering Zak for their money.
Their threats prompt Zak to decide to go back to the moors – where he of course suffered a total breakdown – to find the money he buried up there, but he feels he can’t do it alone and asks Cain for help.
But Cain – who Zak nearly murdered in the Judgement Day attack – refuses, leaving Zak not only with injured pride but also leaving him to face the loan sharks alone in his fragile state.
However, when Zak fails to find the money, he decides he needs another solution, so, having waited until his family are all in bed asleep, he then rings someone and tells them to come round immediately to collect the money…
We’ll have to wait until tonight to see what Zak’s up to, but in the meantime, Steve Halliwell who of course plays Zak, has revealed that he was glad the show’s writers gave him the breakdown storyline because it reflects something that happens to real people.
While appearing on Daybreak, he said, “[Viewers have] seen another side to him…
“The guy who can sort everything out with his fists, he’s realised that’s not always the answer.
”It was difficult because to make it real you have to go there in your mind to places you don’t want to and trigger off emotions.”
However he added that fans have opened up to him about their own mental health problems.
He said, “People are talking to me about their own mental illnesses. They feel like they know Zak and talk to me as if I’m Zak.
”People’s lives are full of dramas. It’s reflective of real life in that sense.”
