Paul O'Grady: For The Love Of Dogs

Monday, 17 September 2012, 8:00PM – 8:30PM

“I wish I had my time over again you know. I wouldn’t be on telly. I’d be a vet. Honestly.”

Presenter and comedian Paul O’Grady absolutely loves dogs, so he’s spending seven weeks with the staff and canines at the world famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. He’ll be following dog’s ‘tails’ from their arrival at the home through to their adoption into a new family.

This week Paul is asked to help dog behaviourist Brian with a dog who has developed an extreme fear of men. Benny is half Rottweiler, half Bull Mastiff, but it seems he may have been abused before he came to Battersea. Brian is trying to get him used to meeting new people and today it’s Paul, who struggles with the idea of a dog who doesn’t want to be his friend: “I’ve never had a dog react to me like this before. It’s almost like he wants to get friendly but he won’t allow himself. If you look at him he shies away.”

Paul also helps out in the clinic with two dogs who came to Battersea as inseparable best friends and are trying to find a new home together. Oliver, an elderly Labrador, and Heidi a bouncy Bichon-Frise. They were brought in together by their owner, who couldn’t afford them anymore. Paul scrubs up in his best clogs to assist in the clinic, as they both need to undergo routine procedures before finding a new home.

And the staff and dogs prepare for an important visitor, Battersea’s first celebrity ambassador – male model David Gandy. Paul’s asked to help out by looking after his beloved favourite dog Carmine and they both have to be on their best behaviour. But first there’s the small matter of giving Carmine a bath to spruce him up for the occasion. Carmine looks the business but sadly the same can’t be said for Paul: “I’m covered in hairs, look at me. I’m gonna meet a model and I look like I’ve just been dug up and hit with a shovel because of you…”
