Paul O'Grady: For The Love Of Dogs

Monday, 10 September 2012, 8:00PM – 8:30PM

Presenter and comedian Paul O’Grady absolutely loves dogs, so he’s spending seven weeks with the staff and canines at the world famous Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. He’ll be following dog’s ‘tails’ from their arrival at the home through to their adoption into a new family.

This week there’s a rare and exciting event happening at Battersea. A tiny stray Chihuahua cross called Bourbon arrives at the home heavily pregnant. An X-ray shows four puppies, which is too many for such a small dog to give birth to, so head vet Shaun has to arrange an emergency C-section when Bourbon goes into labour at 2am.

It’s touch and go whether the tiny puppies will survive and Shaun explains: “The next concern for us is she doesn’t appear to have any milk, which given how emaciated she is, isn’t really a surprise. At this age they take quite a lot of feeding, every couple of hours, so there’s going to be lots of sleepless nights to come.”

Battersea’s second exciting event of the week is a trip to Crufts, where Paul is called upon to take part in the Staffie agility display. Paul meets Frank, a very well trained dog, it’s just a shame there’s not much time to train Paul: “As my mother used to say, if at first you don’t succeed, cheat, that’s always been my way…Come on Frank, we’re gonna win, me and you…Rescue dogs can do it just as well as posh dogs.“
