In this episode, Angelo weighs up an offer to buy his café; Maria alienates her friends by falling in with a group of art students; Kris avoids an old acquaintance; and Karen and Dave attend Kevin’s party.

Angelo and his fellow café owners are attending a presentation by Café Mania, a franchise company with designs on London’s greasy spoons. But the fancy charts and business jargon prove too complicated for the humble proprietors, who have no idea what the speaker is talking about. Back at the café, Angelo tells Russell he is unsure about whether or not to sell his establishment. “I don’t even know if I’m ready to give all this up,” he says. “I mean, cooking is my life.”

Maria’s dreams of superstardom receive a boost this week when she hears that she has made the long list for auditions on ‘The X-Factor’. “I’m down to the last 12,000!” she tells her father. Maria and best pal Alisha head to the auditions, where the would-be diva has plenty of time to practise her routine in the queue.

Angelo’s regulars include married police officers Karen (writer Horgan) and Dave (Paul Garner), intimidating minicab driver Shelley (Miranda Hart, ‘Nighty Night’), Maria’s best friend Alicia (Alice Lowe, ‘Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’, ‘Hot Fuzz’) and bitter mime artist Kris (Simon Farnaby, ‘The Mighty Boosh’, ‘Blunder’) – who has a major crush on Maria.
