Gary Fleder’s thriller, based on James Patterson’s novel, stars Morgan Freeman in his first outing as forensic psychologist Alex Cross. Called in to track the kidnapper and killer of young girls, he’s joined by Dr Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd), who has escaped the killer’s dungeon. But the investigation gets personal when his niece Naomi (Gina Ravera) is kidnapped.

Hilary Swank stars in Clint Eastwood’s film as Maggie Fitzgerald, a waitress who believes she can make it to the top in the female boxing ranks. Much against his will, she persuades ageing trainer Frankie Dunn (Eastwood) to take her on, and with his sidekick Eddie “Scrap-Iron” Dupris (Morgan Freeman), he takes her to the top and a title fight. Which is when the film takes a very different turn and Dunn faces guilt and doubts that conflict with his strict Catholic beliefs. The film is an outstanding, riveting drama and it’s no surprise that Swank and Freeman won Oscars for their performances, Eastwood for best director and the film for best picture.

Part of the Films for Life season. Jon Favreau’s all-action movie stars Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the world’s richest and most powerful arms manufacturer and dealer. But, while demonstrating his latest weapon in the Middle East, he’s kidnapped by insurgents after his knowledge. Kept prisoner with a fellow scientist, he constructs an exo-skeleton of iron which gives him super-human strength and enables him to escape. Back home, and now a reformed character, he refines his invention until he becomes Iron Man, scourge of warmongers both at home and abroad. But not all his enemies are out in the open…

Part of the Films for Life season. John Carpenter’s fun martial arts romp keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek throughout. Kurt Russell plays Jack Burton, who agrees to pick up a friend’s girlfriend, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), from the airport. But she’s kidnapped in front of him, and he finds out that she’s been abducted by sorcerer Lo Pan (James Wong), the host of the spirit of an ancient Chinese warlord. He wants her unique green eyes to rejuvenate his spirit, and Burton has just hours to track down his lair and free Yin.

Part of the Films for Life season. Danny Boyle’s eight Oscar- and seven BAFTA-winning blockbuster opens as Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a chaiwallah at a call centre, is on the verge of winning 20 million rupees on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? But the host of the show, Prem (Anil Kapoor) is convinced he’s cheating and hands him over to the police to beat the truth out of him. Jamal reveals that the right answer to each question has come from a significant part of his life.

Part of the Films for Life season. Bruce Robinson’s witty and perceptive first film as writer and director follows the hilarious drink-and drug-fuelled misadventures of two struggling actors (Richard E Grant and Paul McGann) in a squalid London flat and an isolated cottage in the Lake District during the last months of 1969. The excellent supporting cast includes Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown and Michael Elphick.

11:25pm Thursday, April 28 on F4

Part of the Films for Life season. Giorgos Lanthimos’s surreal black comedy is set on an isolated country estate where Father and Mother (Christos Stergioglou and Michele Valley) impose a strict regime of home schooling on their son and two daughters. The children are denied contact with the outside world, where they are told man-eating cats roam, but as they grow and their physical needs require fulfilling, it is up to their parents to provide them in their enclosed, stultifying world.

Part of the Films for Life season. Matthew Broderick plays Ferris Bueller who, with his best friend (Alan Ruck), bunk off school in a classic red Ferrari, pursued by irate principal Jeffrey Jones in this comedy classic from John Hughes, king of the 80s teen genre. Edited for language.

Part of the Films for Life season. Quentin Tarantino’s slick and fast-paced third film, based on an Elmore Leonard novel, is a tight thriller centred around blaxploitation star Pam Grier, who plays Jackie Brown, a strong woman approaching the end of her career as an air hostess. She’s been trafficking ‘hot’ money for gangster Ordell Robbie (Samuel L Jackson), but when she finds she’s carrying enough for retirement she decides to fly solo, so long as she can keep him, the local cops and the feds convinced of her honesty.

9:00pm Monday, April 25 on F4

Part of the Films for Life season. Tony Scott’s action drama stars Tom Cruise as Maverick, Val Kilmer as Iceman and Kelly McGillis as Charlie. Maverick and Iceman are ‘Top Gun’ pilots with the Navy, both aiming for the number one title, while Charlie is the base psychiatrist trying the get inside their heads (although both men have their designs on her). Adding to Maverick’s air of mystery is the riddle of what happened to his father, missing in action over Vietnam. Besides this and the love triangle come combat missions against an un-named enemy over the Indian Ocean, giving rise to some of the most spectacular flying sequences ever filmed.
