Sky1 today (Tuesday 3 August, 2010) announced the commission of SINBAD (13 X 60’) from the Emmy® and BAFTA® winning Impossible Pictures (Primeval).

The new production promises a 21st century take on the classic 8th century iconic hero, SINBAD, reinvigorating the hero’s adventures for a contemporary audience.

Commissioned by Elaine Pyke, Head of Drama, Sky 1 HD, the series will be exec produced by Impossible Pictures’ Sophie Gardiner and Tim Haines from scripts by an award winning staple of writers including Jack Lothian (Ashes To Ashes, Shameless) and Neil Biswas (Skins, Martina Cole’s The Take). Annie Harrison-Baxter, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Sky1 HD, will exec produce for Sky.

SINBAD. Hero or Villain? On the run from his home town of Basra and under a curse for a killing that led to the death of his much-loved brother, the streetwise SINBAD finds himself cast out to sea. Surviving a violent and magical storm, both SINBAD and his intriguing fellow ship-mates are forced to band together to face their inner demons, hopes, loves and fears. Our flawed hero embarks on an epic and emotional quest to rid himself of the curse and embrace his destiny. When mystical meets muscle anything can happen….

Pyke commented: “Our SINBAD is 21, reckless, utterly charming and cursed. Mysticism, magic, monsters and high octane action adventure, this SINBAD is always exciting and sometimes challenging. This unique series will have the ambition of LOST, the pace of 24 and take the viewer to visually stunning locations on both sea and land. Sky’s SINBAD will be a multi-layered series for today’s prime time audience.”

Gardiner added: “This is a hugely ambitious project and we’re thrilled to partner with Sky to reinvigorate this much loved action hero. We’re confident that SINBAD will confound audience’s expectations and create a big, noisy series for Sky 1.”

SINBAD is part of Sky1’s multi-million pound HD drama investment fund. Principal photography is scheduled to start in Malta in February 2011 for a scheduled premiere on Sky 1 HD in the winter. The search is now on to find an actor to play the iconic role. SINBAD is an Impossible Pictures production for Sky1 and BBC Worldwide. Grainne Marmion is the producer. BBC Worldwide is the international distributor.

Today (Tuesday 3 August, 2010) Stuart Murphy, Director of Programmes, Sky 1 HD unveiled Sky 1’s autumn line-up at a showcase for Sky’s premium entertainment channel.

Following on from the recent announcements surrounding HBO and original comedy, Sky 1 HD continues to invest heavily in original content across all genres this season – including the best mix of comedy, drama, entertainment and factual programming and a strong line-up of newly acquired series from the US.

Murphy commented: “As a team we’ve made a commitment to turn the channel into one that will not only give more value to current subscribers, but one which will also encourage those who don’t currently have Sky to get us.”  He continued “In just over a year we’ve shifted the budget around to put terrestrial levels of spend behind our commissioned shows…it means a focus on ‘less is more,’ commissioning fewer shows, which allows us to hire the best presenters, actors, writers, production teams and to create shows which have unquestionably high levels of quality.”

In drama, Murphy complemented the upcoming slate for ‘offering programmes of scale, with compelling themes and distinctive voices, featuring the best on and off screen talent’. New to Sky 1 this season are thorne starring David Morrissey leading an all-star cast in the gritty adaptations of two of Mark Billingham’s bestselling crime novels; and Mad Dogs starring Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, John Simm, Marc Warren and Ben Chaplin is a darkly comic twisted four-part tale from an original script Cris Cole.

Sky 1 HD launches its first foray into original comedy for over 10 years with Little Crackers this December. The season of autobiographical comic shorts brings some of Britain’s best-loved comedy stars, including Catherine Tate, Victoria Wood, Dawn French, Kathy Burke, Stephen Fry and Bill Bailey to Sky 1 HD this Christmas, in dramatisations of stories from their pasts.

In entertainment, Murphy promised ‘presenters audiences love’ and ‘formats that are gripping’. The autumn schedule kicks off with Must Be The Music on Sunday 15 August. The series, hosted by Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, offers authentic acts and performers a national platform to showcase their talents and features an outspoken panel of judges including Dizzee Rascal, Jamie Cullum and Sharleen Spiteri. Fifteen semi-finalists will fight for the opportunity to perform live at Wembley Arena in front of an audience of 10,000 people and to win the £100,000 prize money, plus creative and promotional support to help them kick-start a career in the music business. In October, James Corden leads out the teams as a second and cheekier season of the riotous sports panel show kicks off in a new, later, time slot, with Jamie Redknapp, comedian John Bishop and Georgie Thompson all returning as regular panellists. Then in January, 2011 a second wave of dance fever is set to sweep the nation as Davina McCall hosts a super-sized series two of the Sky 1 HD spectacular, Got To Dance, with returning judges Adam Garcia, Kimberley Wyatt and Ashley Banjo, and a new top prize of £250,000.

In Factual, Murphy said Sky 1 HD were on the lookout for shows that “make viewers laugh out loud, inform them in surprising ways and entertain both young and old.”  The brand new series, An Idiot Abroad, features Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sending their best mate, Karl Pilkington on a global voyage of discovery. A typical ‘little Englander’, Karl isn’t much of a traveller and prefers to holiday in Wales, but now he’s set to experience a variety of people and cultures as he explores the Seven Wonders of the World in this unmissable eight-part series launching in September. Also returning this autumn is a new four part series,

Coke Zero Street

Striker presented by Wayne Rooney, that sees the Manchester United superstar launch a new search for the UK’s best street footballer.

Returning US series include the multiple Emmy® nominee Modern Family; brand new The Simpsons featuring guest starring roles from Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Kim Cattrall, Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Daniel Radcliffe and Rachel Weisz; the award-winning medical drama House starring Hugh Laurie returns for a seventh season; plus there’s brand new series of JJ Abrams’ boundary-pushing drama Fringe and new Bones, NCIS: Los Angeles, Caprica and Stargate Universe.

Sky1 HD today (Tuesday 3 August, 2010) announces a deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution to air breakout comedy RAISING HOPE and two hotly anticipated drama series from the LA Screenings, RIDE-ALONG and LONE STAR.

RAISING HOPE is a single-camera family comedy series from Emmy® award-winning Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl); RIDE-ALONG a drama set in Chicago’s Police Department, created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit); and LONE STAR a Texas-based drama from the team behind Party Of Five.

Sarah Wright, Acquisitions Controller, Entertainment commented: “We’re thrilled to have secured three of 20th Century Fox’s best upcoming series’ for Sky1 HD. As a channel we want to continue to bring customers television worth paying for and RAISING HOPE, RIDE-ALONG and LONE STAR were standouts from the LA screenings – quite simply three of the best shows this year. ”

RAISING HOPE follows the Chance family as they find themselves adding an unexpected new member to their already flawed household. Parents Virginia (Martha Plimpton, Fringe, The Good Wife) and Burt (Garret Dillahunt, Burn Notice) are rocked by the news that their son Jimmy (newcomer Lucas Neff) has fathered a baby boy with a wanted felon, Lucy. With Lucy locked up in jail, Jimmy is charged with raising his child. RAISING HOPE also stars Academy Award® and Emmy® award-winner Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw and Shannon Woodward (ER) as Jimmy’s new love interest Sabrina.

RIDE-ALONG, a new drama from Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit) presents the city of Chicago as a paradox that serves as the setting. During a ride-along, a civilian spends a shift in the passenger seat of a squad car, observing the work day of a police officer. But in this series, the audience is the passenger, taking an unpredictable ride through the streets of Chicago and navigating crime and corruption with the most respected – and notorious – cops in the city.

Starring Jason Clarke (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Public Enemies) as Jarek Wysocki, a local legend and veteran of the Chicago Police Department. Joining Clarke are Jennifer Beals (Lie To Me) as Chief of Police Teresa Colvin, Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights) as Jarek’s partner Caleb Evers, Devin Kelley (Tease) as Jarek’s niece and also a rookie beat cop, Vonda, and Todd Williams (In Plain Sight, CSI) as Isaac Joiner, a charismatic cop who takes unnecessary risks on the job that land him and Vonda in some dangerous situations. Also starring Delroy Lindo (Gone In Sixty Seconds) as Alderman Ronin Gibbons a building-magnate-turned-politician who has ruled his ward with a velvet glove for three decades. Jarek and Teresa are convinced Gibbons and his cohorts, including Liam Hennessey (Billy Lush, The Black Donnellys), an Irish tough guy in Gibbons’ construction empire, are dirty to the core, but they’ve never had the evidence to prove it. When a murder investigation leads them to Gibbons, they are determined to bring him to justice and clean up Chicago – if that’s even possible.

LONE STAR welcomes newcomer James Wolk as Robert/Bob Allen, a charismatic and brilliant schemer who has meticulously constructed two lives in two different parts of Texas. He’s juggling two identities and two women in two very different worlds – all under one mountain of lies.  As “Bob,” he lives in Houston and is married to Cat (Adrianne Palicki, Friday Night Lights), the beautiful daughter of Clint (Jon Voight, Midnight Cowboy, 24), the patriarch of an ultra-wealthy Texas oil family. More than 400 miles away in the suburban west Texas town of Midland, he’s “Robert,” living a second life with his sweet, naïve girlfriend, Lindsay (Eloise Mumford, Law & Order: SVU).

In Midland, he plays the perfect boyfriend while secretly bilking local investors of their savings. In Houston, he’s a devoted husband, charming Cat and her family to cement his position in the rich family business he aims to clean out.

Bob has lived both lives successfully for years without arousing any suspicions…so far. While one brother-in-law, Drew (Bryce Johnson, Popular, The Mentalist), admires Bob, his other brother-in-law, Trammell (Mark Deklin, Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives), is growing suspicious of his motives. With the cons closing in on him, Bob begins to fear his secret lives may unravel as he becomes divided by his love for two women; his loyalty to his father and mentor, John (David Keith, An Officer and a Gentleman, Men of Honor); and his respect for his father-in-law, Clint.

Now as he tries to hold his two lives together, while fending off angry investors and the growing suspicions of those around him, Bob puts it all on the line hoping he can beat the odds, leave the schemes behind and keep two separate relationships afloat.

Steve Cornish, SVP & MD, 20th Century Fox Television Distribution, commented: “Following the continued success of other Fox series on the channel, we are excited that Sky 1 HD will now be launching these three new shows which we are certain will also prove to be must-see TV.”

Sky1 HD today announces a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution for the exclusive UK television rights to the critically acclaimed family sitcom THE MIDDLE, starring Emmy® Award winner Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and created by Eileen Heisler & DeAnn Heline (both How I Met Your Mother).

The single-camera comedy will begin its first season this Summer on Sky 1 HD and Sky 1 and will build on the channel’s growing reputation for great comedy shows kick-started by the multi award-winning The Simpsons and Modern Family. The announcement was made today by Louisa Forsyth, Acquisitions Manager, Entertainment, and Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, President, Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.

THE MIDDLE stars Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Frankie Heck in a comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Middle-aged, middle class and living in the middle of the country, this harried wife and working mother of three uses her dry wit and sense of humor to try to get her family through each day intact.

Frankie has a job (not a career) selling cars at the town’s only surviving car dealer, with the support of her friend and colleague, Bob (Chris Kattan, Saturday Night Live). Her husband, Mike (Neil Flynn, Scrubs), is a calamity-prone manager at the local quarry.

Frankie and Mike try to balance their jobs with raising their troublesome kids with love and solid practicality. Axl (Charlie McDermott, Frozen River) is the oldest, a teenage jock with discipline issues and a penchant for parading around in his underwear. Sue (Eden Sher, Weeds) is their extraordinarily ordinary pre-teen daughter who fails at everything with great gusto, and Brick (Atticus Shaffer, Hancock), is an odd kid whose best friend is his backpack. Together, they’re putting THE MIDDLE on the map.

Louisa Forsyth commented: “I’m delighted we have secured THE MIDDLE. It’s extremely funny and has been a big hit in the US, leading into Modern Family. Last week we announced Sky 1 HD’s first raft of UK comedies. This show adds to that momentum and the reputation Sky 1 HD has for bringing the best US and UK shows to the small screen. We feel this is one of the absolute best.”

Jeffrey Schlesinger said: “Sky 1 HD has made a significant commitment to expand its comedy programming offerings, and we think THE MIDDLE is a perfect fit for their audience, a family-based series that entertainingly – and realistically – depicts the challenges families face today. The show has performed strongly in the US on ABC, and we expect it to become a hit with UK viewers, as well.”

THE MIDDLE returns for a second season this fall in the US on the ABC Television Network. Entertainment Weekly declared the first season of THE MIDDLE to be “beautifully written and acted,” while The Washington Post proclaimed it “a triumph.” TV Guide Magazine said that “Patricia Heaton proves why she has all those Emmys in this refreshingly sweet family sitcom,” while The Wall Street Journal exulted that Heaton “shines in a finely tuned performance as Frankie Heck.”

From the makers of Pineapple Dance Studios comes a brand new genre of television – a documentary/comedy hybrid which tackles the wonderful world of man’s best friend, from the dogs themselves to the humans who are mad for mutts. Celia Taylor, Head of Factual and Features, has greenlit the 8 x 60” series for transmission on Sky 1 HD and Sky 1 this autumn.

The brains behind Sky 1 HD’s runaway success of 2010 are turning their attention from prima donnas to prima pooches.

The brand new observational documentary series is set to feature everything from dog grooming salons to dog day care centres, dog whisperers to dog agility competitions where cameras will follow both the people who work there and those who bring their dogs in.

Viewers will get to know the salon owners, the canine couturiers and the owners – but the stars of this show will be the dogs themselves for one simple reason: All the dogs will talk to each other.

Scripted and voiced by up-and-coming comedians, the dogs’ personalities will be set against that of their owners’ and will include characters such as the Russian billionaire’s ‘mafia’ Blood Hound, a city-boy’s posh Cocker Spaniel, a builder’s camp Pit Bull and a therapist’s neurotic Poodle.

Celia Taylor, Commissioning Editor, Factual and Features, Sky 1 HD, Sky1, 2 and 3 commented: ““As a nation of dog obsessives this series will be a funny, woof-tastic treat for us all. It’s exciting and brilliant to keep pushing the boundaries of observational documentary making for Sky 1 HD and I hope that people love it as much as they did Pineapple Dance Studios.”

Jonathan Stadlen, Creative Director, Pulse, says: “Mixing the conventions of straight ob‐doc with ‘ob‐dog’ comedy, this is Best In Show meets Look Who’s Talking with the stylistic sensibility of Pineapple Dance Studios. We’re delighted that Sky1 HD has given us the creative freedom to turn our attention from prima donnas to prima pooches.”

Dogumentary is executive produced for Pulse Films by Jonathan Stadlen, Series Directed by Hannah Springham and Series Produced by Tamsin Dodgson. It was commissioned by Celia Taylor for Sky1 HD and Sky1.
