Sky Sports will be the only place to see all four days of the Masters live from Augusta National Golf Club under a new deal starting next year.
In the UK & Ireland, next year’s Masters will be the first shown live on Sky Sports, the first with the par-3 competition scheduled live on a broadcast TV channel and the first of golf’s Majors to be shown in 3D.
Under the agreement with the Masters Tournament, Sky Sports will give its viewers:
ALL FOUR DAYS LIVE – exclusive live coverage of the opening two days means Sky Sports is the only place in the UK & Ireland to see all four tournament days live.
MORE LIVE COVERAGE – exclusive live coverage of Wednesday’s Par-3 Contest and daily Tournament coverage from the host broadcaster will start an hour earlier than ever before.
3D BROADCASTS – for the first time there will be live 3D coverage of the Masters, alongside high definition broadcasts, in the UK & Ireland.
Reacting to the announcement, Barney Francis, Managing Director for Sky Sports, said “Sky Sports is the only place to see all four days of the Masters, live. It will also be the first of the Majors here to be covered in 3D, giving a unique view of the Masters and really capturing the contours of the stunning Augusta National course.
Barney Francis continued: “Sky Sports has enjoyed a great partnership with golf for nearly two decades. We follow a hundred different tournaments each year, from five different continents, featuring the US and European tours, three of the Majors and the Ryder Cup. We are excited that The US Masters is now at the heart of our golf calendar.”
Sky Sports analyst Butch Harmon, a coach for two different Masters winners, said: “This is great news for Sky Sports and all golf fans – showing it in 3D means Sky Sports can bring this right into people’s homes. My father won the Masters in 1948 and I’ve seen two players that I have coached, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, win the Masters. I have been going to the Masters my whole life and for me the Masters is the greatest golf tournament in the world.”
Live coverage from Augusta will start on Wednesday 6 April 2011 with exclusive live coverage of the Par-3 Contest. Exclusive live coverage of the first two days of the Masters Tournament follows on Thursday 7 April, with the final two days covered live on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August 2011.
As well as live 3D coverage and HD broadcasts on Sky Sports, customers will be able to follow the Masters live on PC and laptop through Sky Player and on their phones and iPads via Sky Mobile TV.
Sky started to test 3D technology two years ago and on 31 January 2010 broadcast the world’s first live sports 3D TV broadcast – Arsenal v Manchester United. Sky has now shown live 3D coverage of international cricket, domestic rugby union, rugby league and darts championship. A new residential channel, Sky 3D, will launch in October 2010 with a range of sport, movies, documentaries, entertainment and arts content.
Sky1 today (Tuesday 3 August, 2010) announced the commission of SINBAD (13 X 60’) from the Emmy® and BAFTA® winning Impossible Pictures (Primeval).
The new production promises a 21st century take on the classic 8th century iconic hero, SINBAD, reinvigorating the hero’s adventures for a contemporary audience.
Commissioned by Elaine Pyke, Head of Drama, Sky 1 HD, the series will be exec produced by Impossible Pictures’ Sophie Gardiner and Tim Haines from scripts by an award winning staple of writers including Jack Lothian (Ashes To Ashes, Shameless) and Neil Biswas (Skins, Martina Cole’s The Take). Annie Harrison-Baxter, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Sky1 HD, will exec produce for Sky.
SINBAD. Hero or Villain? On the run from his home town of Basra and under a curse for a killing that led to the death of his much-loved brother, the streetwise SINBAD finds himself cast out to sea. Surviving a violent and magical storm, both SINBAD and his intriguing fellow ship-mates are forced to band together to face their inner demons, hopes, loves and fears. Our flawed hero embarks on an epic and emotional quest to rid himself of the curse and embrace his destiny. When mystical meets muscle anything can happen….
Pyke commented: “Our SINBAD is 21, reckless, utterly charming and cursed. Mysticism, magic, monsters and high octane action adventure, this SINBAD is always exciting and sometimes challenging. This unique series will have the ambition of LOST, the pace of 24 and take the viewer to visually stunning locations on both sea and land. Sky’s SINBAD will be a multi-layered series for today’s prime time audience.”
Gardiner added: “This is a hugely ambitious project and we’re thrilled to partner with Sky to reinvigorate this much loved action hero. We’re confident that SINBAD will confound audience’s expectations and create a big, noisy series for Sky 1.”
SINBAD is part of Sky1′s multi-million pound HD drama investment fund. Principal photography is scheduled to start in Malta in February 2011 for a scheduled premiere on Sky 1 HD in the winter. The search is now on to find an actor to play the iconic role. SINBAD is an Impossible Pictures production for Sky1 and BBC Worldwide. Grainne Marmion is the producer. Today (Tuesday 3 August, 2010) Stuart Murphy, Director of Programmes, Sky 1 HD unveiled Sky 1’s autumn line-up at a showcase for Sky’s premium entertainment channel.
Following on from the recent announcements surrounding HBO and original comedy, Sky 1 HD continues to invest heavily in original content across all genres this season – including the best mix of comedy, drama, entertainment and factual programming and a strong line-up of newly acquired series from the US.
Murphy commented: “As a team we’ve made a commitment to turn the channel into one that will not only give more value to current subscribers, but one which will also encourage those who don’t currently have Sky to get us.” He continued “In just over a year we’ve shifted the budget around to put terrestrial levels of spend behind our commissioned shows…it means a focus on ‘less is more,’ commissioning fewer shows, which allows us to hire the best presenters, actors, writers, production teams and to create shows which have unquestionably high levels of quality.”
In drama, Murphy complemented the upcoming slate for ‘offering programmes of scale, with compelling themes and distinctive voices, featuring the best on and off screen talent’. New to Sky 1 this season are thorne starring David Morrissey leading an all-star cast in the gritty adaptations of two of Mark Billingham’s bestselling crime novels; and Mad Dogs starring Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, John Simm, Marc Warren and Ben Chaplin is a darkly comic twisted four-part tale from an original script Cris Cole.
Sky 1 HD launches its first foray into original comedy for over 10 years with Little Crackers this December. The season of autobiographical comic shorts brings some of Britain’s best-loved comedy stars, including Catherine Tate, Victoria Wood, Dawn French, Kathy Burke, Stephen Fry and Bill Bailey to Sky 1 HD this Christmas, in dramatisations of stories from their pasts.
In entertainment, Murphy promised ‘presenters audiences love’ and ‘formats that are gripping’. The autumn schedule kicks off with Must Be The Music on Sunday 15 August. The series, hosted by Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton, offers authentic acts and performers a national platform to showcase their talents and features an outspoken panel of judges including Dizzee Rascal, Jamie Cullum and Sharleen Spiteri. Fifteen semi-finalists will fight for the opportunity to perform live at Wembley Arena in front of an audience of 10,000 people and to win the £100,000 prize money, plus creative and promotional support to help them kick-start a career in the music business. In October, James Corden leads out the teams as a second and cheekier season of the riotous sports panel show kicks off in a new, later, time slot, with Jamie Redknapp, comedian John Bishop and Georgie Thompson all returning as regular panellists. Then in January, 2011 a second wave of dance fever is set to sweep the nation as Davina McCall hosts a super-sized series two of the Sky 1 HD spectacular, Got To Dance, with returning judges Adam Garcia, Kimberley Wyatt and Ashley Banjo, and a new top prize of £250,000.
In Factual, Murphy said Sky 1 HD were on the lookout for shows that “make viewers laugh out loud, inform them in surprising ways and entertain both young and old.” The brand new series, An Idiot Abroad, features Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sending their best mate, Karl Pilkington on a global voyage of discovery. A typical ‘little Englander’, Karl isn’t much of a traveller and prefers to holiday in Wales, but now he’s set to experience a variety of people and cultures as he explores the Seven Wonders of the World in this unmissable eight-part series launching in September. Dogumentary (8 x 60, Pulse Films). A brand new observational documentary from the makers of Pinapple Dance Studios centres on the world of dog grooming salons, doggy day care centres and vets’ clinics where cameras will follow the people who work at them, as well as their clients. But in Dogumentary the stars of the show are the pampered pooches themselves, and these are no ordinary canines – they can actually talk. In surreal moments, the mutts talk to each other in funny and off-the-wall exchanges about their lives, loves and observations on the world. Commissioned by Celia Taylor, Head of Factual, Sky 1 HD.

Raising Hope (13 x 30, 20th Century Fox International Television Distribution). From the makers of My Name Is Earl comes a new single-camera comedy which charts the chaos an unexpected arrival brings to an already flawed household. Parents Virginia (Martha Plimpton) and Burt (Garret Dillahunt) are rocked by the news that their son Jimmy (newcomer Lucas Neff) has fathered a baby boy with a wanted felon, Lucy.
