PC Nate Roberts (Ben Richards) wakes up after an uncomfortable night in a hospital chair, watching over teacher Becky James (Naomi Ryan). Once awake, Nate tells her that the man who attacked her, Marcus Bentley (Jack Morris), has confessed that he was paid by someone to break in and steal Becky’s laptop. Becky is overwhelmed and can’t think why anyone would want her computer.
Nate later pays a visit to Deansgate pupil, Kim Patterson (Ruby Bentall) who surprises Nate by telling him the first relationship her father Russell (Charles Daish) had after her mother died was with Becky, but that she abruptly ended it six months ago. As the investigation continues, Nate is stunned to discover that it was Russell who paid Marcus to steal Becky’s laptop. What could be on there that he wanted so urgently?
Nate and DC Jacob Banks (Patrick Robinson) head to Russell’s house to bring him in for questioning, but the case takes a sudden turn when Russell says that Kim has gone missing. Nate speaks to Kim’s friend Jimmy Ryan (Nathanael Baring) who swears he doesn’t know where she is.
Back at the station, officers discover an email that was sent from Kim to Becky’s laptop, saying that she would like to talk to a counsellor about her father. Nate gently questions Becky, who admits she broke up with Russell as she had strong suspicions that he might be sexually abusing Kim. Determined to find the teenager, Nate begs Jimmy to tell him where Kim is and reluctantly Jimmy leads him to a derelict classroom. Kim is horrified to see Nate and the officer is stumped when she defends her father. Is this a straightforward case of abuse, or something more?
As the case reaches its conclusion, Nate collects Becky from hospital and takes her home. Grateful for all he has done to help her, Becky moves closer to the officer and the two of them lean in for a kiss…
