BBC News School Report Takes The Temperature
Hundreds of schools will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest interactive weather report on Thursday 11 March.
As part of the record attempt teenagers across the UK will take a temperature reading for their area at 9.15am and feed the data to the Weather Centre at BBC Television Centre.
The temperature readings, taken in celsius, will then be used to fill in a BBC Weather map for a special broadcast later in the day. Each school taking part has a temperature disc on the map which has been located using the coordinates of the school and the combination of the discs on the map will show the variation of temperatures across the UK. Students in London will also be joined by well known weather icons such as Michael Fish as the event unfolds.

Mark Thompson Speech - Putting Quality First: The BBC and Public Space
Today we're launching a set of proposals which chart a new long-range direction for the BBC. Even more than today, we want the BBC of the future to put quality first; to do fewer things better; to guarantee access for all not just to its own services but to the wider benefits of digital; to make the licence-fee work harder; and to set new boundaries for itself.
The proposals are our answer to a set of challenges laid down last summer by our governing body, the BBC Trust. From today, the Trust will take the proposals and consult the public about them before arriving at its own view about the strategic way forward for the BBC.
Of course, if you'd read press speculation about the proposals over recent days, you'd assume that the only questions the strategy review was set up to answer was about the BBC's size and what it should stop doing.

Following publication of the BBC Trust Service Review of BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, a BBC Management Statement was issued:
We welcome this report and the Trust's acknowledgement of our ongoing efforts to ensure Radio 2 remains a distinctive network, fully focussed on its mature audience, and that 6 Music has built a loyal listenership that enjoys its broad range of music.
Radio 2 offers an unrivalled range of music – including jazz, country, big band, organ music, folk and musical theatre – alongside news, current affairs, religion, comedy, social action initiatives and readings, so we are delighted that 91% of respondents feel that Radio 2 offers something that could not easily be replaced by any other station.
