cannibal killer
This documentary examines the case of David Harker, who killed Darlington woman Julie Paterson and claimed to have eaten her flesh. The film follows the trail of human devastation in the wake of Harker’s crime, which was to claim two more lives.
In 1998, the town of Darlington was rocked by the brutal murder of Julie Paterson and the arrest of her killer, David Harker. This film combines interviews conducted in 2000 with new insights from witnesses, police officers and local reporters to unpick the story of Harker’s terrible deed and its deadly consequences.
The man who was to be dubbed the ‘British Cannibal’ moved to Darlington in 1995, aged 23. By all accounts, Harker was a lively, unpredictable man who surrounded himself with impressionable young friends. Yet he harboured disturbing fantasies and would later profess his desire to become Britain’s youngest serial killer.
Julie Paterson, meanwhile, was a 31-year-old mother-of-four who had lost her children in a custody battle and was battling depression, alcohol and Valium addiction. Her boyfriend at the time, Alan Taylor, recalled that Paterson would frequently disappear for days on end. It was only when she missed crucial appointments with her children that he first alerted the police.
An appeal to the public yielded the information that Paterson was last seen in the company of David Harker. Acting on a tip-off, detectives were called to a secluded lane where they were shocked to find parts of Paterson’s dismembered body in a sack. “We could clearly see on the top of the sack the shoulder blades of a human being,” recalls Detective Inspector Ian Phillips.
Prior to the gruesome find, Harker had bragged to numerous friends that he had killed Paterson and mutilated her body – but no one had believed him. “He boasted about how he chopped up Julie,” recalls his friend Matt Fairly. “Obviously, he was drunk, so I just passed it off and didn’t believe him.” A search of Harker’s flat provided police with all the proof they needed, with the discovery of Paterson’s belongings and pools of blood on the floor. Harker at first denied the crime and refused to reveal where Paterson’s missing head and limbs were buried. His denial prompted a massive police operation as the entire town was swept for Julie’s remains. Officers spent weeks searching a landfill site in vain before the hunt was finally called off.
Harker, meanwhile, was diagnosed as having all the criteria of a psychopathic killer who felt no remorse for his crime. His story became more outrageous, as he claimed to have killed two more people and to have committed acts of necrophilia and cannibalism on Paterson’s body.
Sentenced to life in jail, he began a letter-writing campaign to the press in a bid for attention. “His motivation was notoriety,” says Karen Westcott, a journalist for the Northern Echo. “His trump card is that he’s never said where her remains are and I think he won’t do that because he knows that it’s keeping him in the press.”
In the wake of the murder, Alan Taylor became obsessed with finding the rest of Paterson’s body and took to digging holes all over Darlington. In 2000, he revealed his anguish when he was filmed standing over his lover’s grave. “The nightmares I have... in a way, I’m like a murderer myself because I have to think how, maybe, he’s done it,” Taylor said.
Taylor turned to drink and in 2006 murdered his friend John Morrison by strangling him with a belt. He claimed that he wanted to be sent to the same prison as Harker in order to exact revenge on his girlfriend’s killer. Three months after being sent away for life, Taylor committed suicide. Now the lead officer in Paterson’s case plans to visit Harker in prison in a final effort to learn what became of his victim’s remains and bring closure to this tragic story.

What David had done was disgusting. I watched the documentary on TV last night, and was, well, scared to death. which is very rare. I've heard of psychopathic killers, but i never took them seriously. Until I saw this. And I wonder if this guy was the 'normal' psychopathic killer. then what would the 'abnormal' ones would be like. i remember that he wanted to be a good monster. and he denied to accept that he was unbelievably and utterly evil. The man is disgusting, he highlighted the fact that he was treated cruelty by his father, which could have been true since this is not the normal human behavior but a lot of it could have been lies because as they said in the documentary, they are selfish people, they only care about themselves, which would be obvious for the way he treated his Julie and his other victims, even the dog he killed when he was sixteen, and there is the fact that he wanted to be a serial cannibal killer, ambition, a dream, a dream that someone right now might be happened, and for what i can do is pray that it never, ever comes true. I hope that they find Julie's body parts, and I hope, i really hope that they seek out other killers of such kind. and for all I know I'm happy for all that I have.Flea
After hearing the riddle and after looking at a map of Darlington, I wondered if instead of near a "church or hill" the parts were disposed of in the river in Winston only 20miles or so from Darlington, any thoughts anyone.Anonymous00000001
HARKER IS A BELL END!riddle
I've seen documentary on tv, Harker said to the police where Julies remains are, he wrote a riddle and named it "Churchill". The riddle is going something like this: I own a bank but I have no money, I have a bad but I don't sleep, I have a mouth but I don't eat, I have beginning but I have no end.. etc. The answer is a river. I think, Julie Patersons remains are somewhere in the river... maybee near some church or hill... ? (sorry on my bad grammar, english is not my native language)J.N
I never new this man but heard about him always been a bit wierd and dodgey.. some one i know once slept in a front room with him before the murder..Anonymous

CID didnt find Julies torso... I did!!! I was on duty as night shift police dog handler. I was sent to search areas in Darlington for Julie a missing person. My police dog 'Tyler,'a german shepherd located her body. I notified supervision who alerted CID.I however was not sure what I had found at that time, as it was simply a human torso. I will never forget this, and daily I think of this poor woman and the family she left behind. God Bless her and may her soul rest in peace.

i knew harker and spent a fair bit of time knocking aroung with him and a few other punks, in bishop auckland , just before he moved away to darlington. i always found him to be very polite, witty and charming, nothing at all like how it appears he has been portrayed and infact clearly turned out. he was always very popular with females, as he was very goodlooking and had the most lovely eyes. i spent many times in bishop auckland park with him just me and him sitting under a tree driking cider and mainly having a good laugh. i was a fair bit younger than him and im female, he was never anything but totally respectful and gentleman-like, so when i found out what he had done i was very shocked. i never really saw a bad side to him at all, i just remember him as being so very funny.
before he went to darlington he was nothing short of a nice lad with an excellent sense of humour, he may well have had another side but i certainy saw no evidence of this. i still find it really unbelievable when i see programmes and articles about him, as this scruffy, unkempt, violent, nasty, psychotic murderer, as this really wasnt how he was when i knew him, maybe that hadnt surfaced yet i dont know. i just find the entire episode really very sad for all concerned, especially julie paterson and her family.

I used to live opposite the harkers when i was young (around 7/8 yrs old)and play with David Harker.. my self (female) and another unamed guy used to play together every day .. He was always a little weird .. tall shaved head even when he was young .. long green mod jacket ..but at the time the mods were in so you woudnt think anything of it and if you looked at this father you would maybe see that you just thought he was like him... he was the same in army camo jackets they kept those dogs that remind me of little pigs.. David H was a little weird, shaved head back then but i will never forget even now i remember when we were playing if you looked at his face he had no expressions.. i remember looking at his eyes they were very dark and because he had no facial expressions it was like you didnt know what was happening behind them.. i certainly couldnt have imagined him doing what he has done but some of the things mentioned since this tradgedy just sums up some of the things i remember when knocking about with David.. His family i believe are still in the area .. who i deeply feel for .. I dont think he would remember me as hes been through so much but i would like just like to ask him why ?? and try to understand him.. as i really dont believe everything that has alledgedly been said .. yeah he was a little weird but no ..I do think maybes drugs or drink has played a big part of it .. but then we were so young too .. people change .. i would like to think that he didnt mean to do it ..
