Channel 4 back catalogue goes online

Channel 4 is going to give us all the chance to watch their entire back catalogue, completely free of charge as they become the first UK broadcaster to put all their old shows online. This means we get the chance to watch some of the best independent comedy shows that have ever aired on TV.

From July, the broadcaster will be making roughly 10,000 programmes from the archives available to view on the 4oD catchup service.

This means that shows like Queer As Folk, Vic Reeves Big Night Out, Ali G, The Adam and Joe Show, Brasseye, No Angels, Teachers and more, getting a much deserved re-airing. They will also be a selection of episodes of the Brookside, so we'll once more be able to see the infamous lesbian kiss and the body under the patio.

Naturally, it won't be every programme ever aired on Channel 4 that will be made available. Some content won't be shared due to legal issues and rights. This means that a large chunk of imported shows like Friends won't be available, and nor will Channel 4 News.

Jon Gisby, the director of future media and technology at Channel 4, said: "We were the first broadcaster to launch a comprehensive video-on-demand service in 2006, and since that time 4oD has become one of the UK's most popular VOD brands. We are extremely proud of the improved service and think the combination of fantastic content that's easy to find and view will prove compelling for all users."
