Corrie actor Graham Hawley – who plays John Stape – has been talking to the Sunday Mail about the direction in which he’d like his character to go.
"I want him to become a good fmily guy. It's nice to see John and Fiz have a relationship.
“We've never seen that, there's always been something bubbling under the surface, but the two of them make a lovely, quirky husband and wife.
"Like many things in Coronation Street, it will depend on the public whether he is redeemed or whether they'll think he's a bad 'un and will always be a bad 'un."
Graham also said he’d been shocked when he’d read in his script that Sally Webster was to brand John a paedophile…
"I did flinch a bit when I read the line” he said, adding, “I was like, 'Crikey'. It's a bit weird. It takes on a whole new meaning.
“It sometimes gets shouted at me in jest when I'm walking along the street. Before I could brush it off, but now it takes a different meaning.
"But from day one the way I've looked at it is, if people are reacting to you and engaging in your character and story, then they'll say stuff.
“If they didn't, I wouldn't have a job here."
And his on-screen wife Fiz’s alter ego, Jennie McAlpine, has revealed to RTE that she and John are in for some stormy times ahead.
Jennie said: "I get the best of both worlds because I get to do the shouting but Fiz always kind of comes out of it looking all right.
“Sally, I kind of feel for her a bit more because she's actually the baddie so the audience are booing her.
"So I get to say all the horrible lines but then the audience are cheering for me so I don't think Sally likes it as much as me."
Jennie added thought that she and Sally Whittaker, who plays Sally Webster, get on "really well" which apparently “makes the fight scenes easier”.
"We're all great mates, there's no real room for not being. But when you are really good mates with someone you can play around with it in the fight scenes.
“You can really go for it and not be afraid of hurting them too much."
