man down (15/24)

The forensics drama series continues tonight. In this episode, which concludes last week’s ‘No Man’s Land’, the CSIs hunt for escaped convict Clavo Cruz, while Delko clings to life in the hospital after being shot.

Horatio is horrified at the thought that he may be about to watch another member of his team die; after Speedle died in his arms (back in Season 1), he is not about to let Delko go as well. The injured CSI was shot in the head and the thigh during a desperate search for Cathy Gibson, a bank worker taken hostage by Horatio’s nemesis, convicted killer Clavo Cruz. Now Delko is in the hospital, Cathy is nowhere to be found – and Clavo is on the run.

As Horatio watches on, the doctors working on Delko finally manage to drag him back from the brink of death. The fallen CSI’s distraught colleagues visit him in turn and determine to carry on working to ensure justice is done, regardless of their fears for Delko. Wolfe and Calleigh head to the crime scene, where they discover gunshot residue (GSR) on the roof of a car belonging to security guard Stan Keeler. Suspecting that Keeler used the car to steady his aim when shooting Delko, the CSIs test his firing hand for GSR but find nothing.

Meanwhile, Natalia is working on finding Clavo. He absconded with a million dollars – but a GPS device placed in the money bag has enabled the CSIs to pinpoint a location: Black Point Beach. When the CSIs get to the beach they find the empty money bag, Clavo’s handcuffs and a wounded, sobbing Cathy Gibson tied up underneath a boat. She tells them that Clavo beat her up and left her in the water, but analysis of her injuries proves that she is not telling the whole truth. She was actually Clavo’s accomplice and freed him from his cuffs, unaware that he would leave her to die once she was no longer useful.

The next stop on the hunt for Clavo is the Baracan consulate, where his stepfather, General Cruz is staying. There has been bad blood between the two men ever since the General disowned Clavo, on Horatio’s urging, and Clavo is seeking revenge. Horatio gets there in time to see the pair arguing, but he is too late to stop Clavo killing his stepfather and absconding. “Promise me you’ll end this for good,” gasps the General with his last breath – and Horatio vows to do so.

Following Clavo’s escape route from the building, the CSIs find something that puts a whole different spin on Clavo’s activities: an uncut diamond. The investigation then leads them to dealer Audrey Van Der Mere, who is found to be using child labour to process blood diamonds for her store; and Joseph Trevi (Joaquim de Almeida, ‘24’), who not only turns out to be a friend of General Cruz’s but is revealed to be Clavo’s biological father. When Horatio tells Clavo that Trevi is about to give him up, Clavo brushes the news aside: “I still have you,” he says sarcastically. “This cat-and-mouse game is just about to start getting fun.” Where will it end?

Calleigh and Wolfe, meanwhile, are continuing to hunt for the man who shot Delko. When the bullet removed from Delko’s head is analysed, Calleigh discovers that the gunman used a rifle – which means that they need to test Stan Keeler’s other hand for GSR. This time they get a positive result – and have their man.

Delko is going to live, and the man who tried to kill him will go away for a long time –but when Delko starts asking for his murdered sister, Marisol, Horatio realises that his young colleague may never be the same again...
