The sixth season of the Miami-based crime drama continues. When the boyfriend of a teenage internet celebrity is murdered at a swimming competition, the CSIs are presented with thousands of possible suspects in the form of the girl’s crazed and jealous male fans.
Horatio arrives at his latest crime scene to learn that high-school football hero Luke Selyan has been shot dead with a bow and arrow while watching his girlfriend, Candace Walker, compete in a swimming contest. With no one coming forward as a witness, Horatio questions the young swimmer as to who would want Luke dead. “Everyone,” answers Candace. “Ever since that picture turned up online last month.”
At the lab, new technician Samantha Barrish begins trawling the internet and learns of Candace’s overnight celebrity status. “I googled her name – over quarter of a million hits already,” she tells Eric. The photo of the swimsuit-clad teen was taken just two weeks earlier. As soon as it was published online by an unknown photographer, a reluctant Candace became a worldwide pin-up.
Even more alarming is the fact that her fans have posted videos, sightings and up-to-theminute locations of Candace on a stalker website. According to Sam, this is a new form of “citizen journalism” in which any member of the public can post real-time information.
Continuing to pore over the online photos, Eric spots something unusual. One of the photos of Candace has been taken in extreme close-up. The photographer is holding her face in his hands while she gazes up at him lovingly. “How can you take a picture that close without holding a camera?” asks Sam. “You can’t,” confirms Eric, “unless you’re wearing it.”
In the autopsy room, Eric hits upon another clue that points to Luke’s involvement in Candace’s rise to fame. Whilst going through his personal effects, Eric notices a pair of expensive sunglasses that have spy software fitted onto them. However, fingerprints on the glasses suggest they actually belong to a professional blogger, and not to Luke.
Hauled in for questioning, the internet entrepreneur admits to switching Luke’s own sunglasses with the bugged pair in order to get the best footage of Candace. But he is quickly eliminated as a suspect because he cannot be placed at the crime scene.
Elsewhere, Calleigh investigates the high school archery team and its coach, Robert Whitten. Seizing all of the bows in the equipment room, Calleigh pinpoints one as the murder weapon. Natalia then examines the bow for DNA – and finds Coach Whitten’s...
Going back to re-interview him, Calleigh suggests that Whitten is in love with Candace and wanted Luke dead. “I calibrate the bows for the team,” says Whitten. “I don’t fire them.”
Natalia and Calleigh set to work once more, this time examining the draw length of the murder weapon. From this, Calleigh is able to estimate the user’s arm span and in turn the shooter’s approximate measurements – a height of 5’5” and a weight of 100lbs. “Then we’re either talking about a sixth grader...” muses Natalia. “Or our shooter was a woman,” says Calleigh. With Whitten off the hook, the CSIs must sniff out a fresh lead.
Also this week, Horatio is tracked online by the embittered son of a criminal he helped put behind bars five years previously. The canny detective hatches a plan to corner the young man and engineer his arrest – but will the boy fall for it?
