First Cut , the documentary strand that showcases up and coming directors, continues with Ceri Whitby's documentary, Pussies Galore . Britain is a nation of cat-lovers: we keep more than seven million as pets, buy 400,000 tonnes of cat food every week, and spend ?55 million on cat toys every year. Pussies Galore meets three women who are feline fanatics, who take their devotion to their cats to extraordinary lengths.

Regarding the documentary "Pussies Galore" on Channel 4 12th September...
I think it is incredibly kind and generous that someone like Anne from Wales is prepared to dedicate so much of her time, energy and money to caring for and homing animals. All the cats shown at her sanctuary looked happy and in healthy condition. I can totally understand the rewards Anne spoke of.
Sadly, I found another segment of the documentary upsetting. As much as the owner of Mr Darcy may love her cat, it does seem cruel to subject an animal to that level of repetitious, obsessive preparation for a show or at all. After all, I'm sure Mr Darcy does not nor ever will have any interest in this competition devised by humans.
To wash, then rewash and YET AGAIN rewash the poor feline (as portrayed in the program by the owner herself because the fur isn't satisfactory), is cruel torment and selfishness.
This behaviour in my mind applies to ANY human subjecting ANY animal to similar endless preparation for shows of any kind. Love your pets people, yes - but in the true sense of LOVE and for the sake of the animals' physical/mental wellbeing, show some respect.
Otherwise an interesting documentary.
