Natalie Cassidy on why she left EastEnders

Natalie Cassidy has told Reveal magazine that one of the reasons she left EastEnders in 2007 was because her character – Sonia – had a lesbian affair with her best mate Naomi.

Natalie told the magazine that she’d felt “uncomfortable” with the storyline.

She said, "One of the reasons I left was because of the lesbian storyline I had - I felt that is wasn't right for Sonia.

"Sometimes in soaps, people are so keen to get a shocking story that the character gets forgotten."

Natalie is due to reappear in the show for a brief stint when Sonia comes back to the Square for her sister Bianca’s marriage to Ricky. We’ll see those scenes on February 8th.

When asked if Natalie would consider returning to the show full-time, she said, "It would depend…

“I'd only do it if I had an exciting storyline. I'd hate to go back and dwindle in the background - I'd like Sonia to cause a stir!"

However, Natalie did say that she’d enjoyed being back on the set of the show and seeing her co-stars again…

"It took me a long time not to be known as Sonia” Natalie said, adding, “And I wasn't sure if I was ready for it again…

“But after I did Strictly, people started to get to know me, Natalie, and I realised that it would be a great opportunity.

"Being on set was lovely. I spent 13 years of my life there so it was weird to get used to changes, but it felt like putting a pair of old slippers back on."

Awww bless. I’d like to see her back. What about you?

I think the soaps seem to be a vehicle for left wing propaganda and the limp wrist writers are on a mission to normalise the most perverse relationships. Fortunately the wider public can see through this noncesense and full marks to Natalie for speaking up on this issue. I dread to think what they've got lined up next for us to break down our natural digust reactions!
