Fifth Gear: Episode 6

Monday 13th July 8.00pm

The motoring show continues its 16th run with presenters Tiff Needell, Vicki Butler-Henderson, Jason Plato, Tom Ford, Jonny Smith and Tim Shaw. In this episode, Tom investigates the possible effects of lowering the national speed limit, Jason puts the RenaultSport Clio 200 through its paces and Tiff turns medical courier for the day.

This week, Tom conducts an explosive ‘Fifth Gear’ crash test. With the government considering lowering the national speed limit from 60 to 50mph, Tom puts together a crash scenario that could be found on a typical rural road – a car smashing into a tractor at 50mph. In the aftermath of the crash, Tom speaks to a road safety expert in a bid to find out if lowering the speed limit is really the best way to increase road safety.

Elsewhere, Jason pits the new RenaultSport Clio 200 against a tough competitor from the past – the Renault Clio 182 Cup. The French have always had a stunning ability to produce a good hot hatch, but can their latest model, the most powerful Clio yet, keep up with the lighter, simpler Cup?

Meanwhile, Tiff puts the latest Caterham through its paces in an unusual test. The 175 promises to be a civilised Caterham for the road, while also offering speed and agility. To test the vehicle’s vital signs, Tiff turns medical courier for the day. Delivering essential supplies across the country is the perfect way to judge how well the vehicle combines day-to- day practicality with performance.

Also this week, Tim discovers an alarming truth about the way we maintain our cars – one in five is dangerously low on oil. The consumer champion demonstrates what happens to a car with too little oil. Can he shock members of the public to top up?

At the other end of the scale, Jonny enjoys a bit of luxury with the new Mercedes E-Class. The lavish saloon is packed with more technology than ever, but will it be enough to beat the BMW 5 Series?

Finally, Jason gets ready to wrestle with the monstrous Lamborghini LP670-4 Super Veloce. The most powerful and expensive Lamborghini on sale, it is also the first to wear the ‘SV’ badge since the iconic Diablo SV of the 1990s. Does this new machine have the visceral strength of its ancestor?
