Fifth Gear - Monday September 24

Continuing its 12th series this week, Fifth Gear presents the usual mix of stunts and challenges that push cars and presenters to their limits. Tonight, Vicki Butler-Henderson spends a day with the elite drivers of the police force; guest Sarah Beeny gets behind the wheel of a lorry; Tiff Needell tries out the eagerly awaited BMW M3; and Jonny Smith is set a hilltop challenge.

In today’s show, Vicki finds out what life is like for the police force’s top drivers. She witnesses firsthand how our boys in blue are trained to pilot their vehicles along public highways at speeds approaching twice the national speed limit – before finding out how well her own road skills measure up under examination. Equipped with a powerful car Vicki finds out just how fast the police can drive on her home turf – the track. Will the top cop come anywhere close to her lap time?

TV presenter and property guru Sarah Beeny has long harboured the desire to drive a very big truck –so the invitation to get behind the wheel of one of the latest, state-of-the-art models is an opportunity too good to miss. Astute and outspoken when dispensing advice to property buyers, how will Sarah cope in the beginner’s role? Sarah has to complete an obstacle course involving real cars, and her adversary in the challenge is none other than Jason Plato.

Tiff Needell, meanwhile, drives the car every petrolhead has been waiting for: the new BMW M3. The outgoing model was one of Tiff’s all-time favourites, and the new M3 is even more formidable, boasting a ‘power’ button to boost its aggression.

Elsewhere, Jonny Smith takes three very small cars to a very big hill. Hardknott Pass is Britain’s steepest hill with gradients reaching 30 per cent. Getting to the top is a major challenge for a small engine –especially with a bunch of heavy mates on board.

Also this week, Tom Ford dedicates himself to a day of good deeds behind the wheel of the new Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe, offering himself and the car’s services to anyone who needs them.
