The third season of the Emmy- and Golden Globewinning medical drama draws to a close with a gripping double bill. In the final instalment of the season, Jane Doe’s identity is revealed; Izzie declares her true feelings for George; and Cristina prepares for her wedding day.

Alex is in for a shock this week when Jane Doe accidentally lets slip that she has had a few snatched recollections of her past life. But Alex suspects that she is not letting on as to the full extent of her recovery. “Tell me the truth – do you remember?” he asks. “Do you know who you are?” Eventually, Jane reveals that her entire memory returned a few days ago – and she was not happy to go back to who she used to be. “I was a pregnant woman in a lousy marriage to the nicest guy anyone has ever met,” she recalls. “End of story.”

Addison is still away visiting friends in California, but her holiday has turned out to be far from relaxing. Faced with the reality of her infertility, she tries to reason that it is for the best: “I’m glad I can’t have a child,” she tells Naomi. “With my luck, I’d probably have a kid with two heads.”

Still reeling from Alex’s rejection, Addison takes a spontaneous road trip to California for some personal time. She arrives to find that Naomi, her best friend from med school, is now divorced from her college sweetheart, Sam. Despite this, the pair are still working at the cooperative private clinic that they set up together.

In this week’s episode, Izzie’s past comes back to haunt her, Jane Doe is claimed and Marlow tries to drive a wedge between Burke and Cristina.

It is a week since Izzie’s illicit night with George and she is still feeling raw with guilt. She decides that going to confession is the answer. But George does not even want to address the significance of the issue at all. He even goes so far as to liken his encounter with Izzie to the one-night stand he had with Meredith. “The sad, tragic, depression-inducing sex you had with Meredith is the same?” Izzie asks incredulously.

In this week’s episode, Izzie wakes up on the morning after the night before; Cristina makes a decision about her future with Burke; and it is interview day for the chief-of-surgery hopefuls.

After a night helping George drink himself into oblivion after his flaming row with Callie, Izzie wakes up with more than just a hangover. As soon as she comes to, Izzie sees her best friend lying naked next to her and recalls the previous night’s events. Seizing the opportunity to make an escape, Izzie creeps out of the room without disturbing George.

In this week’s episode, the third of a three-part special, Meredith hovers between life and death. As the other interns come to terms with the possibility that she may not survive, Meredith battles with her demons in limbo.

Since she tumbled into freezing waters while tending to a patient at the dock, Meredith’s life has been hanging tentatively in the balance. For over an hour, Burke, Miranda and Webber perform CPR and defibrillation on Meredith’s lifeless and hypothermic body. As Webber continues in vain, Miranda begins to give up hope. But the chief insists that although Meredith’s heart has stopped, there is still a chance she will survive. “Her body temp is 86 degrees,” he points out. “She is not dead until she is warm and dead.”

In this week’s episode, the second of a three-part special, Izzie must perform neurosurgery with a power drill; Alex struggles to identify victims of the ferry tragedy; and Derek saves Meredith from a watery end.

The drama continues this week as Izzie battles against all odds to save the life of a man trapped under a car. As the man’s close friends look on, the young surgeon begins to crack under the pressure. “I’m out of practice. I’ve been watching for weeks. I’ve just been watching.” Although the patient desperately needs medical attention, he is pinned beneath a tonne of metal and getting him to a hospital is out of the question. Izzie is left with no choice but to call for help.

In this week’s episode, the first of a three-part special, the interns face what could be their biggest challenge yet when they must deal with the fallout of a major disaster.

When Seattle Grace receives word that a serious incident has occurred, the interns jump at the chance to attend the scene. With no idea where they are headed, Meredith, George, Izzie and Alex pile into the ambulance. “All we know is there are multiple traumas,” Miranda tells them. As they arrive at their dockside destination, the junior doctors are shocked by what they see – a ship is in flames and a sea of bodies lies strewn across the pier. Bewildered, they set out to tend to the injured and identify the dead.

When Meredith is summoned to her mother’s bedside, she is shocked to learn that the impossible has happened. Ellis has woken up from her Alzheimer’s and is back to her old self. The problem is, she has no recollection of the previous five years. Not only does she have no idea she suffers from the disease, she cannot even remember her own daughter going to med school. It is up to Meredith to fill her in on what she has missed.

In this week’s episode, George anxiously awaits the outcome of his father’s surgery; Addison continues to struggle with the ghosts of her affair with Mark; and Bailey is unimpressed by Izzie’s generosity.

After his second operation, Mr O’Malley’s restored kidney function was cause for celebration at the hospital. But George is quickly brought back down to earth when his father begins to experience trouble breathing. Bailey warns the family that the seemingly minor procedure to re-intubate Mr O’Malley is actually very risky because of the trauma his oesophagus has already undergone.

In this week’s episode, George’s father prepares to undergo his second operation; Izzie bonds with an angry teenage patient; and Alex returns to obstetrics.

It is another difficult week for George, who is counting down the days before his father undergoes massive cancer surgery. The cardiac procedure on Mr O’Malley went well, which prompts his overjoyed family to organise a bedside celebration for him – but the patient is by no means out of the woods. The surgeons will not know what his future holds until they begin the procedure and see how far the cancer has spread: if it has progressed too far, they will have to call a halt to the treatment.

But Cristina is buckling under the pressure of being the only one to know the truth – Burke’s occasional hand tremor means that something could go wrong at any time. However, with George’s growing suspicion that something is not right, Cristina is aware that it is only a matter of time before he tells the chief. “We need a strategy,” she tells Burke urgently. “We need to figure out our story and come up with a plan.”
