sometimes a fantasy

The third season of the Emmy- and Golden Globewinning
medical drama continues, following the

trials and tribulations of Meredith Grey (Ellen
Pompeo) and her fellow interns at Seattle Grace
Hospital. In this week’s episode, Meredith realises
that dating two men at the same time is not going
to be easy, while Alex deals with a young patient
(guest star Abigail Breslin, ‘Little Miss Sunshine’)
who believes that she has superpowers.
Tired of being unable to decide between Finn and
Derek, Meredith has hit on a solution: date both of
them and see which one acquits himself best in the
romance game. This plan starts off promisingly:
Derek tries to woo her with coffee and asks her out
to dinner, while Finn brings in some cake and
arranges a lunch date. Smugly believing that she
has the best of both worlds, Meredith is pleased
with how her idea is turning out – until Derek
crashes her lunch date. When Finn repays the
favour by showing up after Meredith’s dinner with
Derek, Meredith has had enough of the two
competing against one another and blasts them
both with a rant about how this was not what she
had in mind. “I want heat! I want romance!” she
yells. Can either suitor let his rival enjoy an
uninterrupted date, or is Meredith’s plan doomed?
While Meredith tries to untangle her endlessly
complicated love life, Alex has a difficult surgical
case on his hands. Young patient Megan (Abigail
Breslin) has been brought in with a serious leg
injury. When Alex examines her, he is shocked to
spot a deep laceration on her arm that has been
stapled closed. Suspicion initially falls on Abigail’s
foster parents, but the child insists that she stapled
her own arm – and says that she cannot feel pain
because she has superpowers. When Megan
adds that she tries to prove this by letting people
punch her in the stomach, the doctors discover
that this has caused massive internal bleeding. But
when Megan learns that she needs surgery, she
disappears. Can the doctors find Megan before
she bleeds to death?
Elsewhere, Cristina finds it difficult to deal with
the recuperating Burke, who is now home after his
surgery and on the long road to recovery.
Unamused by Burke’s constant demands, Cristina
is looking forward to the day he returns to work –
but Burke has decided to extend his leave of
absence, as he believes it will take months to
regain his old dexterity and skill. Frustrated at what
she believes to be procrastination, Cristina is
eventually forced to reconsider when she
encounters a patient in a similar situation to Burke.
Izzie is also having a difficult time facing the
future. Everyone is delighted when she
announces that she wants to go into the hospital
to talk through her options with Webber, but
finding the strength to walk through the front
doors proves difficult for her. “Everybody wants
you back in that building,” says George, but Izzie
tells him that she needs a few moments to work
out what she is going to say. But when Bailey
looks out of the window at the end of the day and
sees Izzie still standing in the same spot, it looks
like the troubled intern needs more than just time
to step back inside the hospital.
Also this week, Addison has difficulty
extricating herself from the arms of rebound lover
Mark, finding his attention extremely tempting in
the face of the painful demise of her marriage.
And George tries to find a way of telling Callie that
he is not ready to move in with her.
