The third season of the Emmy- and Golden Globewinning medical drama draws to a close with a gripping double bill. In the final instalment of the season, Jane Doe’s identity is revealed; Izzie declares her true feelings for George; and Cristina prepares for her wedding day.

Alex is in for a shock this week when Jane Doe accidentally lets slip that she has had a few snatched recollections of her past life. But Alex suspects that she is not letting on as to the full extent of her recovery. “Tell me the truth – do you remember?” he asks. “Do you know who you are?” Eventually, Jane reveals that her entire memory returned a few days ago – and she was not happy to go back to who she used to be. “I was a pregnant woman in a lousy marriage to the nicest guy anyone has ever met,” she recalls. “End of story.”

Later, Alex is incensed to discover that the FBI has been looking for the runaway wife for weeks, and that Jane’s name is actually Rebecca Pope. Jane’s new world comes crashing down when her husband arrives to collect her. After she and the baby are discharged with a clean bill of health, Jane corners Alex. “I have every reason to go because medically there’s no reason for me to stay,” she says. “I want you to give me a reason to stay.”

Meanwhile, it is make-or-break time for Alex, Cristina, Meredith, George and Izzie as the day of the all-important intern exam arrives. George has been promised a transferral to Mercy West if he passes. When Miranda gets wind of the news that George plans to decamp, she is incredulous: “You’re in the best surgical programme in the country – the toughest, most competitive, most respected. You want to leave this for Mercy West?”

A heartbroken Izzie backs Miranda’s campaign to keep George at Seattle Grace. Attempting to mask her ulterior motive by lying to George, Izzie tells him: “I know you think I have feelings for you, but I don’t. So you can stay.” Battling to keep the lid on the truth, eventually Izzie confesses to her best friend that she is in fact in love with him...

Elsewhere, Meredith faces the wrath of her newly widowed father. As she prepares to attend Susan’s funeral, Thatcher confronts his daughter at the hospital in an ugly scene. “I don’t want you at any funeral, Meredith,” he spits. “She trusted you. She came to you for help, and you killed her.”

A sympathetic Webber tries to smooth things over, but Meredith is determined to carry on as normal – which means going ahead with the intern exam. However, George notices that Meredith did not even put pen to paper during the test. Will her run of bad luck doom her to failure?

Hot on the heels of exam day is Cristina and Burke’s wedding day. But as Burke’s best man pulls out and Cristina procrastinates over writing her vows, their nuptials look to be headed for disaster. Meredith and Izzie attend a half-hearted hen night, while newly chosen best man Derek throws a slapdash stag do – at which Addison is an honorary guest. Everything is slowly falling into place, but will the couple make it down the aisle?

Also this week, Webber’s soon-to-be ex-wife is admitted with complications surrounding her shock pregnancy. Addison delivers premature twins in an emergency operation. And Callie is overwhelmed by maternal instincts – so George agrees that they should try for a baby.
