On his way to the police station, Sergeant Miller (John Duttine) drives through Ashfordly, while ahead of him, on the pavement, walks Derek Gorman (Aran Bell). Suddenly Miller is caught unawares as Derek steps off the pavement, and into the path of his car. When Miller steps out of his car, it is clear from Gorman’s attitude the two have a long running dispute. Unable to work after losing his licence for drink driving, Gorman is still angry at Miller for enforcing the law and threatens to get even with the police sergeant.
To make matters worse for Miller, when he arrives at the station he finds Ventress (William Simons) standing in the midst of strewn paperwork and fallen filing cabinets – the result of a break in. As the team search through the mess, it appears nothing is missing. What could the burglars have been looking for?
At the garage, Lord Ashfordly (Rupert Vansittart) discusses the fact he is in need of a new gamekeeper having become dissatisfied with the old one, especially as poaching on the estate is out of hand. David (David Lonsdale) announces that Peggy (Gwen Taylor)
believes a lot of amateur poachers are taking advantage of the situation on the estate. When Peggy finds out about Ashfordly’s search for a new gamekeeper, she decides she’s the best person for the job. Talked round into employing her, Ashfordly seems happy when the police cells start filling up with poachers. However, when a near fatal accident occurs on the estate, it appears Peggy’s enthusiasm may land Lord Ashfordly in trouble.
Elsewhere, Carol (Lisa Kay) and Joe (Joe McFadden) bump into each other at the police house. Carol is embarrassed when Joe implies she has been pre-occupied recently with new love interest, Chris. However, when an old flame of Joe’s turns up, he seizes the opportunity to find a distraction for his feelings for Carol. That night, when Joe invites Doreen (Hannah Storey) for a drink, the pair re-kindle their passion and the evening finishes at Joe’s. Is romance on the cards for Mason or is there more to Doreen than meets the eye?
The next morning Joe finds his uniform missing. Unsure what’s happened, he reports the incident to Miller. When Younger (Steven Blakeley) admits his panda car was stolen the previous day, it seems the incidents are somehow linked. A furious Miller believes Gorman is behind the break-ins and is connected to the stolen car. However, the constables are sceptical as to why he would need the uniform. Is Gorman behind these thefts as Miller suspects? Can the team solve the mystery?
Working alone, DS Rachel Dawson (Clare Wille) visits the home of Alec Fletcher (Steven Elder), a police witness in a high profile case. An agitated Alec is worried about leaving the house in case he’s seen and remains unconvinced by Dawson’s reassurances that he’s safe from master criminal Jimmy Faye. Determined to keep the case under wraps from the community and village police, Dawson heads out for supplies. Unbeknown to the pair, neighbour Ivy Sanders (Beatrice Kelley) watches the house, suspicious about Dawson’s frequent visits. When Ivy reports her findings to Mason it seems Dawson’s operation is blown. Without the help of the local police, can Dawson protect Alec?
