Albert Ross (John Henshaw) is shouting orders at his workers as they build a new battery farm. Frustrated at what he believes is a slow speed, Ross demands the men work harder and faster. Stan Keaton (Jeff Hordley) encourages his friend, Josh (Paul Simpson), to do as Albert says. Josh breaks out of his daydream and continues to move a heavy branch. At the same time Albert shouts at a lorry driver who is two minutes late. Dismayed, the driver drives into the farm, not noticing when Josh gets in the path of the vehicle. Suddenly there is a sickening thud followed by silence as all the workers drop their tools to rush to Josh’s side. Josh lies silent and unconscious in a ditch.
At the police station, Ventress (William Simons) reports a complaint from Blaketon (Derek Fowlds) about Ross’ lorries speeding through the village. Miller (John Duttine) sends Wetherby (Rupert Ward-Lewis) and Younger (Steven Blakeley) out to investigate the complaint and to set up a speed trap in the village.
On hearing about the accident, Mason (Joe McFadden) and Miller visit Ross’ farm to investigate. Josh has been taken to hospital, suffering from a broken arm and broken ribs. As Miller questions Ross, Stan shouts out that they are made to work too hard. It’s clear there is ill feeling between the workers and Ross, especially when Stan organises a meeting of the men to protest about the working conditions on Ross’s farm. The police arrive as the protest becomes violent, leading to the arrests of Stan, Josh, and Ross.
Later, Carol (Lisa Kay) arrives at Ross’s farm to visit his daughter, Juliet (Hayley Jayne Standing). Carol enquires about the girl and her father’s workload. Juliet reassures the nurse that all is well. However, Carol is less than convinced when she spots bruising on Juliet’s arms. Are the bruises from an accident, as Juliet claims, or is there more to it than meets the eye?
Elsewhere at the police station, while Miller questions Stan and Josh, Ethan Harper (Tim Scott-Walker) arrives wanting to report a theft. Seventy-five pounds of his father’s money has been stolen and replaced with blank sheets of paper. Being blind, John Harper (Stephen Hancock) didn’t realise the money had gone missing.
When Mason investigates further, John informs him the only visitor he regarding has is Albert Ross. Mason joins Miller to interview Ross and they try to find out more about his visits to John. Miller orders Mason to wait outside the room and, in his absence threatens Ross about his conduct. When Ross later makes an allegation against Miller, will Mason acknowledge what he heard?
After being released from the police station, Ross is attacked that night. Investigating the scene of crime, Mason finds the object that Ross was hit with alongside footprints which lead to Josh and Stan’s caravan. Taking the men back to the station, Josh admits to hitting Ross in order to protect Juliet, and Stan admits to the attack in order to protect Josh. Mason admits to Miller he believes neither of the men are behind the attack, but will they eventually get to the bottom of the assault?
Elsewhere, as David (David Lonsdale) is driving through the countryside, he is shocked when he spots a naked man running through the trees. The following day, when David is with Peggy (Gwen Taylor), he sees the same man jumping from a bridge, plunging into water. David goes in after him and rescues the man, who is somewhat overly grateful, calling David his guardian angel. David and Peggy visit the man’s cottage, learning that he is a musician called Keith (Gareth Watkins). Peggy gets more than she bargains for when she eats his cannabis cake, and David proves to be an inspiration to Keith, leading the mysterious man back to stardom.
