On a Moorland road, Mason (Joe McFadden) rides his bike slowly in front of an ancient tractor engine by the name of Goliath. Behind Goliath drives Wetherby (Rupert Ward-Lewis) in the panda car, equally as slow with a tail of impatient cars bringing up the rear.
At the garage, David (David Lonsdale) waits eagerly for a sight of Goliath. As Mason arrives at the garage in front of the lumbering engine, he informs Bernie (Peter Benson) that they’ve been having a problem with the boiler, just as the engine boiler emits an explosion of hot steam and boiling water, and grinds to halt in the middle of the road. As Wetherby takes the driver to Whitby, Bernie is up in arms that the great bulk of machinery has to be left outside his garage. What chaos will the lumbering engine cause to the village?
Elsewhere, Eva (Deborah Findlay) and James Knight (Tim Woodward) arrive at a road diversion manned by PC Geoff Younger (Steven Blakeley), and as Eva presses her foot to the pedal to stop, the brakes fail to work. As Younger jumps out of the way, the van comes to a halt in a ditch. As the couple get out of the van, Carol (Lisa Kay) pulls up in her Landrover. Younger declares that he is impounding the vehicle for inspection, even though James assures him it is road worthy. When Carol clocks Eva’s cut, she tells Eva that she should go to the hospital. Not keen on hospitals, Eva refuses to go. Knowing she won’t make headway with Eva, Carol offers the couple a lift home.
Eva and James arrive back at their home, Holly Cottage, and invite Carol to see some of their home made pottery. They are stunned to find the place in disarray, with graffiti and a painted swastika on the wall of their pottery studio. Seeing the state of the house, Carol calls the police. However, Eva and James are obviously uncomfortable about the prospect of involving the law.
Meanwhile, Younger has headed back to Aidensfield on his bike to recruit Bernie to remove the Knights’ van. As he arrives at the garage he is greeted by a stressed looking Mason, who is trying to direct traffic around Goliath. It appears that Goliath is going nowhere, but that doesn’t stop Peggy (Gwen Taylor) from deciding to buy the engine. After recruiting Bernie and David to fix the engine with spare parts, Peggy decides David should take it for a test run. Thrilled at the prospect of driving one of his beloved engines, David jumps in the driver’s seat and heads off at full speed. However, much to everyone’s horror, when attempting to stop the engine, the handle comes off in David’s hand and goes hurtling across a field. Will David be able to beat Goliath and escape the run away engine?
When the call comes through from the station about the Holly Cottage break in, Mason eagerly leaves Younger in charge of traffic control. Arriving at Holly cottage, Mason reads the graffiti, whilst James gives him a translation of the German words used. Unsure of the connection, Eva informs Mason that she’s Jewish, not something she readily admits to people. When the couple confess another break in occurred recently, Mason is led to believe they are connected. Can they get to the bottom of this malicious attack before more serious damage is done?
