Cast Cull at Hollyoaks

Cast Cull at Hollyoaks

It seems that Hollyoaks new-broom producer Paul Marquess is, as cast members feared, culling some of show’s characters.

According to the Daily Star, Marquess – who has a history of “getting rid of dead wood” in some of the UK’s most popular soaps – was only two days into his new role when he decided to axe Sonny Flood, Suzanne Hall and Jim Millea who all play members of the show’s long-standing Ashworth family.

However, it had been widely speculated that Andrew Moss, who plays Rhys, would be axed, but it seems that he’s being kept on for the time being though the paper states that there are “doubts” about his long-term future with the show.

A show insider is quoted in the paper as saying, "He's getting rid of the dead wood - nobody is safe…

“This is just the beginning. Over the next few months expect to wave goodbye to even more faces."

The Ashworths first appeared on the show in October 2005 and since then, they’ve been at the heart of some of the show’s biggest storylines, as well as those that have tackled taboo subjects such as incest. We’ve also seen Beth and Hannah both battling eating disorders.

I think it would be a shame to get rid of too many well-loved characters. Going too far down that road could put the show in jeopardy, since the familiarity of the characters is something that viewers love to hold on to, for comfort, when their own lives feel stressful. They should seriously beware of writing too many charismatic / attractive characters out of the show. That would be a huge mistake. Improving the storylines would be a much better idea. There have been some very good storylines, such as Newt's attempted suicide and Hanna's misadventures with the dangerous Jamie; but there needs to be more suspense of this kind and less trivial stuff, to keep the viewers tuning in. Perhaps the writers should watch out for interesting fan fiction, written by Hollyoaks fans. Fan fiction writers have some amazing ideas. It may also be good to have a returning character who proved popular before, such as Luke, played by Gary Lucy.
