This special episode of Ice Road Truckers charts two hair-raising months in the lives of the extraordinary truck drivers who haul vital supplies to diamond mines over frozen lakes. The livelihood of many depends on these tenuous ice roads, which through the years have been responsible for the deaths of dozens of men.
The small town of Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territory is home to the high-risk industry of ice trucking. Every winter, the region’s many lakes freeze over and are converted into ice highways, serving the remote diamond mines.
Skilled drivers are called upon to deliver vital supplies to these far-flung outposts. If they can endure the harsh conditions and the ever-present danger of ice cracking under their wheels, these hardened truckers can make a year’s salary in just two months.
This programme looks back at memorable moments from the series, featuring the motley crew of truckers who test their luck and stamina in the yearly ‘dash for the cash’. Among them are veteran drivers Alex Debogorski and Hugh ‘the Polar Bear’ Rowland, who each have over 20 years’ experience on the ice. Other stars of the show include Jay Westgard, considered the best trucker of his generation at the tender age of 25; confident Rick Yemm, in his second year on the ice; and rookies Drew Sherwood and TJ Tilcox.
Highlights in tonight’s show include Rick’s battles with frostbite in his freezing-cold rig; Drew’s battles with his breakdown-prone truck; and Hugh’s battles with just about everybody. Always prepared for the ice to give way under the weight of their trucks, these drivers put their lives on the line as they race to see who can haul the most equipment over the frozen lakes in 60 days –before the ice melts away.
