The fifth series of the crime drama spin-off
focusing on an elite group of New York cops
Logan and Barek investigate the murder of a
secret-service agent whose husband was
involved in some shady dealings.
After Paula Kendall is found bludgeoned to death
in her home, Logan and Barek’s initial suspicion is
that her husband, Jay, is guilty of the crime.
Covered in his wife’s blood, Jay Kendall explains
that he got home from work to find her injured,
tried to revive her and called the police. He says
that he had tried to call 911 once and was told to
call back, but cannot explain why he waited 11
minutes to do so. Evidence seems to suggest that
Paula was having an affair – sexy clothes were
found in a bag in her car and it appears that she
had removed her wedding ring for a period of time
– but it soon emerges that she was actually a
secret-service agent working undercover.
When the detectives find a parcel in the house
addressed to somebody else, their investigations
lead them to Jud Rorick, a teenager who lives
across the street. Jud has stolen a neighbour’s
credit card and used it to buy hydroponic
equipment for growing marijuana, which he had
delivered to various houses in the street. The
detectives wonder if Jud killed Paula because she
found out what he was up to. The boy denies this
and claims that when he went over to collect his
parcel, he saw a man dressed in a gas company
uniform killing Paula.
Logan and Barek realise that this man was not
expecting Paula to be home: Jay told them that
she was supposed to work late, so the intruder
must have been in the house for another reason.
Delving into Jay’s files, the detectives find out that
he was a lobbyist who had been working for Peter
Bellingham, a Brooklyn congressman, and the
Peconic Native American tribe with a view to
getting a casino built on Peconic land. However,
Jay had also been working for anti-gaming
groups, pitting them against the Peconics to drive
his price up. “Playing everyone against each
other,” says Deakins. “That’s a game that can
blow up in your face.” “And get somebody killed,”
adds Logan.
When Logan and Barek go to Jay’s office to find
out more, Logan notices blood on Jay’s laptop – if
this blood is Paula’s, it means that Jay took it out
of the house after her murder. What could be on it
that he wants to hide? A security guard at the
office says that he saw Jay come in late at night
on the day of the murder – and shred two bags
full of documents. Among the material is a CD
labelled ‘Millennium Studies Center’, which is
discovered to be a money-making front that was
being used to get cash out of the Peconics.
The case becomes even more complicated
when the detectives meet Amanda Breen, an
informant who had met with Paula on the day she
died. Amanda says that she had been asked to
keep Paula busy by Ted Bruno, a retired cop who
now works for Congressman Bellingham. Logan
and Barek suspect that the corrupt Bellingham
found out that Jay’s wife was in the secret
service, and sent Bruno to the Kendalls’ house to
search for information – but Paula had been killed
when she came home early.
When Logan and Barek present Jay with their
theory, they realise that it will not be easy to get
him to testify against his corrupt client. “You’re
letting the people that killed your wife get away,”
Logan reminds him. Will Jay help bring the
congressman down if it means getting himself
into trouble?
