Episode 11

Weekdays at 6:30pm on five

Continuing on Five this week is the documentary series following the day-to-day lives of over 250 monkeys, chimps, orangutans and other animals that live in one of the largest primate rescue centres in the world.

Set in the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset, this much-loved series follows the nail-biting rescue and rehabilitation stories of some of the most abused and neglected primates in the world. Each episode focuses on the unwavering hard work of Alison Cronin and her team in their ongoing mission to stop the illegal smuggling of primates from the wild.

Since its doors were first opened, Monkey World has rescued primates from 18 different countries all over the world. The most recent country to benefit from the centre’s work is Chile, where animals were being used in laboratories, as exotic pets, as photographers’ props and as circus animals. Once the animals have been safely transferred to Devon, the primate care staff at Monkey World ensure that their charges are given the best possible love and attention for the rest of their lives.

In the week’s opening episode on Monday , pregnant woolly monkey Piquita looks fit to burst! Capuchin Sean, over from Chile, is keen to prove that nobody can groom quite like he can. And life hangs in the balance for ruffed lemur Blue. Will she survive?

In Tuesday’s instalment, baby woolly monkey Paulo is tempted outside by some delicious bugs, and everyone is enjoying onions in the capuchin enclosure. The team also has a radical plan for the third meeting between youngster Ben and alpha male Hananya.

On Wednesday , , there is a scuffle between the female capuchins, Tia needs surgery and orangutan Amy is heavily pregnant –and very grumpy. In the chimp nursery there is something new in the play area. Alison has her last visit with Paulo, the baby woolly monkey she has successfully hand reared.

In Thursday’s episode, chimp Ben has a nasty foot wound and animal director Jeremy is worried. In Paddy’s chimp troop, it may be his dad who is the boss, but baby Bart is realising that he is pretty important too! Elsewhere, golden-cheeked gibbon Tien has undergone a transformation, and keeper Holly checks up on Xuzy.

In the final instalment of the week on Friday , it is a race against time as the team tries to stop an infection spreading among the chimpanzees. The orangutans are watching their weight, but are not so keen to get onto the scales! And the lemurs and stump-tailed macaques meet for the first time. Could they become housemates?
