Film4 joins the national 2008 celebration of the centenary of the birth of David Lean with an extensive season of some of his finest films. David Lean's melodrama stars Ann Todd as Madeline Smith, daughter of a prosperous family in Victorian Glasgow who conducts a clandestine affair with penniless Frenchman Emile L'Anglier (Ivan Desny). When she is betrothed to the more suitable William Minnoch (Norman Wooland), L'Anglier threatens to expose the relationship and ruin her. Soon after, he dies from poison and she stands trial for murder but is it murder or accidental death?
