News Five Culture Announces Contemporary Folk Music Series

Five Culture, the partnership between Five and Arts Council England, has commissioned an exclusive series of documentaries exploring the musical influences of four of the most successful artists in contemporary folk music, it was announced today (THURS).

Produced by the Proudfoot Company, My Music consists of four, hour-long programmes which, for the first time, gets under the skin of musicians; Seth Lakeman, Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy and Athena.

The series launches on Five in the Spring and is the latest in the Five Culture initiative which sees Five and Arts Council England encourage viewers to engage in the arts.

Tom Ravenscroft, son of legendary Radio One DJ John Peel, narrates the programmes that focus on a separate artist in each episode. Meanwhile high profile contributors including Billy Bragg, Jennifer Saunders, Stewart Lee and Willy Russell comment on the artists and their contribution to popular culture.

1Xtra announced today a series of changes to the mainstream and specialist schedule, as DJs Trevor Nelson and Tim Westwood joined the digital radio revolution with new shows on the network.

In further news, UK hip hop specialist MistaJam takes over a new five-day slot.

The refreshed schedule reflects an evolution of 1Xtra's music priorities and has been designed to ensure the station continues to champion the most important black music.

The changes kick off on 10 September with the specialist schedule:

MistaJam hosts a new cross genre show featuring the best in underground flavours plus the big hits, mixes, live music and charts.

House DJ Footloose and hip hop specialist Sarah Love will be joining the station for new mix shows.

From 10 each night, 1Xtra will have the big hitters in specialist music – Ronnie Herel, Robbo Ranx, Bailey, Target and Semtex – representing the very best in RnB, Dancehall, Drum & Bass, UKG and hip hop.

Crissy Criss is promoted to an earlier slot on Monday nights, midnight-2am.

7 July 2007 – Live Earth – a date for the history books.
And for anyone not lucky enough to get tickets to the concerts the BBC has lined up some of its top presenters to front its coverage of what promises to be the year's biggest music event.

Jonathan Ross, Graham Norton and Edith Bowman will host coverage of Live Earth, which features a sensational line up of international artists, including performances from Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and James Blunt amongst many others.

And with TV and radio coverage of Live Earth from London and right around the globe, the BBC continues to be the place to enjoy huge scale live music events.

Jonathan Ross will present live coverage of the London concert on BBC One and BBC Two. From a special studio at Wembley, he will provide his own unique brand of commentary as well as speaking to a host of international superstars and special guests about the day's music and the environmental issues behind the concerts.
