Continuing tonight is the series that sees Julia
Bradbury and Toby Amies offer opinionated,
advice. In this instalment, the intrepid duo scour
the globe for the best activity holidays on offer.
Julia’s research takes her to Tenerife in the Canary
Islands, while Toby heads to the tropics to explore
the beautiful country of Laos.
Recent trends show that British holidaymakers
are turning their backs on the traditional package
tour in favour of more activity-based trips in farflung
places. With this in mind, Julia and Toby
focus this week on the activity holiday, scouring
the globe for the most exciting, action-packed
tours available.
Julia kicks things off with a trip to the Spanish
island of Tenerife – the largest of the seven Canary
Islands, situated off the northwestern coast of
mainland Africa. Though Tenerife has long been a
popular destination for the British package tourist,
Julia decides to avoid the beaches and crowded
resorts in pursuit of excitement. After learning to
water-ski, she heads further out into the ocean for
a spot of whale-watching. She then goes for the
ultimate adrenaline high in the form of a tandem
paraglide flight off the top of a mountain.
Toby, meanwhile, seeks his own adventure in
the mountainous country of Laos in southeast
Asia. His first stop is the popular backpacker town
of Vang Vieng in the northwest, where there are all
manner of activities on offer. After battling the
tropical elements in a kayak, he heads to the Nam
Xong River for a spot of ‘tubing’ – a relaxing
recreation that involves drifting down the river in an
inflatable tyre tube. He then journeys deep
underground into the Tham Nawn cave – known
locally as the ‘sleeping cave’ owing to the fact that
hundreds of hill-tribe villagers sheltered from the
bombing there during World War II.
