The summer of cricket continues on Five as England take on South Africa in a four-match Test series. Join Mark Nicholas and his commentary team Geoffrey Boycott, Simon Hughes and Barry Richards for highlights of the fourth Test, from the Brit Oval in south London.
At the time of writing, South Africa lead the fourmatch series 1-0 after a thoroughly convincing victory in the second Test in Leeds. The defeat left England with a lot of thinking to do and highlighted problems in virtually every area of their game. The batsmen were eclipsed by the efforts of their South African counterparts, who showed patience, grit and sound techniques. England threw their wickets away, with Alistair Cook the only specialist batsman to pass 50 in either innings.
The gamble to play wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose at six in place of Paul Collingwood failed, with the gloveman looking even more fragile batting at a higher position. The bowlers – including the returning Andrew Flintoff – toiled long and hard to claim the ten wickets they managed to get.
However, the biggest debate has been about why the England selectors decided to hand a debut to 29-year-old seamer Darren Pattinson –who, before this game, had only played 11 first-class games – instead of favouring one of Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison or Simon Jones –who have claimed over 500 Test wickets between them.
So South Africa seem to hold all the aces so far this summer – and England will face an uphill struggle to win their first home series against the Proteas since 1998. However, Edgbaston (the venue for the third Test) and the Brit Oval have been happy hunting grounds for England in recent years – can they reverse their fortunes?
