Mark Nicholas presents highlights from England’s one-day international series against South Africa, with commentary from Geoffrey Boycott, Simon Hughes and Barry Richards. Tonight’s match – the third ODI – comes from the Brit Oval in London.
To say the last week of English cricket has been dramatic would be a gross understatement. At the time of writing, England have lost the third Test against the Proteas and with it the series. Michael Vaughan then stood down as Test captain while Paul Collingwood resigned as ODI skipper. England’s star batsman Kevin Pietersen has been announced as the successor to both men.
The appointment of the South African-born Pietersen has come as a surprise to many. As well as having no previous experience of captaincy at any level, the occasionally reckless Pietersen seems very different from his urbane and canny predecessor. Many questions have been asked about his suitability as England skipper: will the extra pressure jeopardise his batting? Will he lack the strategy and patience that Vaughan seemed to possess in abundance? Whatever happens, it promises to be an absorbing honeymoon period for the new captain.
South Africa, currently basking in their Test success, will be eager to show the English crowds just what they can do in this form of the game, after soundly beating England in the 2007 World Cup. Where the English look unsettled and woefully inconsistent, South Africa look solid, experienced and organised. Moreover, South African skipper Graeme Smith will relish the prospect of having Kevin Pietersen as his opposite number.
