16 and Pregnant

10:00pm Tuesday, August 17 on LIVING

Starting an awkward talk about the facts of life with a teenager can be difficult, but this week LIVING helps out tongue-tied parents when 16 and Pregnant concludes. More than just an excellent springboard for a sex-ed lesson, the eye-opening US documentary series tells the compelling stories of real-life teenage mums. Shattering stereotypes while not shying away from the difficulties and compromises of early motherhood, the show has been praised for adding to the national discussion of a pressing issue on both sides of the Atlantic.

With a light touch and fun presentation, the programme tackles a serious subject in an entertaining way that both young people and adults can enjoy watching. The thought-provoking series comes to an end this week with a special look back at all the girls featured in series one, as host Dr Drew (Celebrity Rehab) shares intimate and never-before-seen footage of their challenges and struggles.

Viewers are treated to the behind-the-scenes story of Maci and Ryan’s wedding woes and the dramatic inter-family battle over Catelynn’s decision to put her baby up for adoption. Also, cameras capture former beauty queen Farrah’s disappointment when she misses out on participating in the pageant of her dreams, and Ebony’s pain when her mum misses her baby shower. Big changes make for heart-wrenching telly, as 16 and Pregnant revisits its most emotional moments for this week’s finale.

Starting an awkward talk about the facts of life with a teenager can be difficult, but this week LIVING helps out tongue-tied parents when 16 and Pregnant continues. More than just an excellent springboard for a sex-ed lesson, the eye-opening US documentary series offers the compelling story of real-life teenage mums. Shattering stereotypes while not shying away from the difficulties and compromises of early motherhood, the show has been praised for adding to the national discussion of a pressing issue on both sides of the Atlantic.

With a light touch and fun presentation, the programme tackles a serious subject in an entertaining way. Both young people and adults can enjoy watching, as a young couple is followed from pregnancy through the wrenching changes of bringing home an infant. This week, it is the turn of shy 16-year-old Georgia native Whitney, who shares a small home with her mother, grandmother, boyfriend and pet pooch. But these crowded quarters are about to get even cosier, as both Whitney and her mother are pregnant!

With tensions running high at home, Whitney struggles to come to terms with teenage motherhood, dropping out of school and realising that her social life as she knew it is about to end. And when baby Weston is born, even more anxiety is added to the mix. Will this big southern clan find a way to come together for the sake of the next generation, or will Whitney, her boyfriend and their baby have to find alternative living arrangements?
