Channel 4 has been reprimanded for breaking the rules by airing the word “retard”.

Former footballer and actor Vinnie Jones used the word on an episode of Celebrity Big Brother’s Big Mouth which screened on 29 January on E4. He described the show’s host Davina McCall as “walking like a retard” when she entered the house in a chicken suit.

Media regulator Ofcom has since ruled the network was in the wrong in airing the word after it received eight complaints regarding the incident.

Originally the complaints were rejected by Ofcom but two of the complainants asked for a review and the decision was passed on to the Broadcasting Review Committee who deemed the channel had breached generally accepted standards.

“This is not a call for censorship or to block free speech,” said one of the complainants. “It is simply a call for the matter to be dealt with fairly and for the views of disabled people and those of us who love them to be listened to. The word must be judged by the context, and in this case it was derogatory.”

Channel 4 said that the incident, which occurred on a live broadcast, was unfortunate and they apologise to anyone who may have been offended.
